Jung Bo Youn
An Evening in Hannam-dong, Preserved in Painting. As the sun begins to set, light falls across the hills of Hannam-dong. The rooftops and walls of tightly clustered houses are divided into areas of light and shadow, while narrow alleys wind upward toward a church at the top of the hill. This is the neighborhood that Jung Bo Yeon has observed and painted for many years. For some, the scene recalls a place they lived in childhood; for others, it offers an unfamiliar view of Seoul.
The artist first sketched the neighborhood around 2004 and began painting it in earnest in 2009. One night, the lights she saw through a bus window gave her the courage to return to the subject. Carrying a sketchbook and a packed lunch, she would make her way to Hannam Bridge and spend hours observing the neighborhood. In the houses standing close together and the people living their everyday lives within them, she found the strength to persevere herself.
From a distance, the painting appears as a single neighborhood. Up close, however, the lines and colors of individual rooftops, walls, and windows come into focus. Houses of varying heights and orientations fit closely together, while contrasting areas of light and dark create the contours of the hillside. Remaining faithful to the actual location, the artist also carefully considers the overall color and composition of the painting. The vivid colors may initially make the scene feel unfamiliar, yet a single small window can reveal traces of everyday life that feel deeply recognizable.
She learned the techniques used to depict these scenes from her father, who painted traditional Buddhist paintings. She prepares the surface by backing cotton fabric, grinds pigments herself to make the colors, and fills in the composition with fine brushes. Her use of gold powder and gold leaf to express light also carries forward techniques from Buddhist painting. Her father's teaching never to treat even a single dot carelessly remains evident in the meticulous work of completing each small house.
This exhibition presents Hannam-dong as it transitions from day into night. The gradually fading sunlight, the church on the hill, and the alleys winding between houses invite viewers to witness the closing hours of the day through the evening stillness the artist loves. Now that the landscapes she once painted have disappeared through redevelopment, Jung Bo Yeon is returning to the sketches she has collected over the years. Through her paintings, she hopes to preserve the memory of how people once lived there.
Jung Bo Yeon's original paintings are best appreciated by first taking in the neighborhood as a whole, then looking closely at each individual house. As the eye moves from the sky to the church, from rooftops and windows to narrow alleys, the delicate lines and carefully layered colors begin to reveal their intricate details. Even within a small composition, numerous houses and pathways are interconnected.
When selecting a work, it is helpful to compare the overall color palette, the direction of the light, and the proportions of sky and buildings. The gold details are also worth observing closely in the original paintings. These works are especially recommended for those who wish to reconnect with memories of a familiar neighborhood or bring the delicate craftsmanship of traditional Korean painting into their everyday surroundings.
