조현영은 램프워킹 기법을 중심으로 유리를 다루며, 일상 속에서 사람과 교감하는 유리 작업을 이어가는 작가이다. 대학에서 유리조형을 전공하며 유리 작업을 시작한 작가는 일반적으로 차갑고 단단한 재료로 인식되는 유리를 오히려 따뜻한 소재이자 관계를 이어주는 매개체로 바라본다. 뜨거운 열을 통해 유리를 직접 성형하며 재료와 호흡하는 과정을 중요하게 여기고, 자신의 기억과 경험에서 비롯된 이미지를 작품에 담아낸다. 물속을 유영하는 물고기와 바다에서 뛰어오르는 범고래, 장미와 눈사람 등 친숙한 형상은 작가의 기억을 바탕으로 만들어지며, 이를 통해 완성된 작품이 사람들에게 정서적인 위안과 심리적인 안정, 따뜻한 감정을 전하기를 바란다. 나아가 유리라는 소재와 자신의 작업이 사람과 사람의 관계를 이어주는 하나의 매개체가 되는 것을 지향한다.

작가는 토치의 열을 이용해 유리를 녹이고 성형하는 램프워킹을 주요 작업 방식으로 사용하며, 투명한 유리와 섬세하게 만들어진 작은 형상을 결합해 다양한 오브제와 생활 기물을 제작한다. 친근하고 익숙한 이미지를 유리의 형태로 구현해 일상에서 실제로 사용할 수 있는 기물에 유리공예의 조형적인 즐거움을 담아내며, 실용적인 도구로서의 기능뿐 아니라 심미성을 지닌 장식물이자 관계를 상징하는 대상으로 작품의 의미를 확장한다. 또한 일부 작업에서는 유리에 점자를 접목해 시각적인 언어가 지닌 한계를 넘어 촉각을 통해 메시지를 전달하고자 한다. 이를 통해 ‘따뜻한 동행, 함께 사는 세상, 장벽 없는 소통’이라는 방향으로 유리의 표현 가능성을 확장하며, 누구나 유리라는 소재의 순수성과 예술성을 함께 경험할 수 있는 작업을 모색한다.

조현영의 작업은 공예품이 단순한 감상의 대상에 머무르기보다 사람의 일상 속에서 사용되고, 그 경험과 감정이 다시 다른 사람과의 관계로 이어지는 과정에 주목한다. 작가는 자신의 작품이 현대를 살아가는 사람들에게 휴식과 위로, 심리적인 안정을 전하고 마음을 나누는 매개체가 되기를 바라며, 유리를 통해 자신이 경험한 기억과 따뜻한 감정을 함께 나누는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 이와 함께 램프워킹 교육과 다양한 협업 및 프로젝트에도 참여해왔으며, 서울공예창작센터 유리 테크니션과 대학 램프워킹 강사 등으로 활동했다. 현대백화점×챕터원 아키타입 프로젝트, 삼성 비스포크×챕터원 비스포크 부티크 프로젝트, 국립익산박물관 미륵사지 사리장엄 복원사업 등에 참여했으며, 현재 Glasshoy를 운영하고 홍익대학교 도예유리과 강사로 활동하는 등 유리공예의 영역을 넓혀가고 있다.

Jo Hyun-young is a glass artist whose practice centers on lampworking and explores the ways glass can interact and connect with people in everyday life. Having studied glass art at university, Jo began working with a material commonly perceived as cold and rigid, instead approaching it as something warm and as a medium through which relationships can be formed. She values the process of directly shaping glass with intense heat and engaging closely with the material, incorporating images drawn from her own memories and experiences into her work. Familiar motifs such as fish swimming through water, orcas leaping from the sea, roses, and snowmen emerge from these memories. Through these forms, she hopes her works can offer emotional comfort, a sense of calm, and warmth to those who encounter them. Ultimately, she seeks to make glass and her practice a medium that connects one person to another.

Jo primarily works with lampworking, using the heat of a torch to melt and shape glass, and combines transparent glass with delicately formed miniature figures to create a range of objects and functional wares. By translating familiar imagery into glass forms, she brings the sculptural pleasure of glassmaking into objects that can be used in everyday life, expanding their meaning beyond practical function to encompass aesthetic objects and symbols of human connection. In some works, she also incorporates Braille into glass to communicate messages through touch, moving beyond the limitations of purely visual language. Through this approach, she expands the expressive possibilities of glass around the ideas of “warm companionship, a world we live in together, and communication without barriers,” seeking ways for everyone to experience both the purity and artistry of glass.

Jo Hyun-young’s practice focuses on craft not simply as an object of contemplation, but as something that becomes part of everyday life, allowing experiences and emotions to extend into relationships with others. She hopes her works can offer moments of rest, comfort, and emotional calm in contemporary life, serving as a medium through which people can share feelings and connect with one another. Alongside her artistic practice, she has participated in lampworking education, collaborations, and a variety of projects, and has worked as a glass technician at the Seoul Craft Creation Center and as a lampworking instructor at universities. Her projects include the Hyundai Department Store × Chapter1 Archetype Project, the Samsung BESPOKE × Chapter1 BESPOKE Boutique Project, and the Mireuksa Temple Reliquary Restoration Project at the Iksan National Museum. She currently runs Glasshoy and teaches in the Department of Ceramics and Glass at Hongik University, continuing to broaden the scope of her glass practice.
