Woo Byoung Yun is an artist who explores the layers and structures of the pictorial surface through a repetitive process of building up materials and scraping them away. Rather than defining two opposing states as one or the other, he is interested in remaining at the boundary between them, creating works that resist being confined to a single meaning through the tensions between control and chance, density and emptiness, and completion and incompletion.
His representative <Superposition> series begins with the concept of “superposition,” in which different states coexist simultaneously. The artist constructs surfaces using plaster and paint, repeatedly building up layers of color and scraping them away to reveal the materiality and traces of the medium. The subtle variations and layers that emerge through this process create distinctive textures and structures across the surface, raising questions about the state that exists before an object is confined to a single meaning.
This exploration continues and expands through his <Yoolryoe> series. While <Superposition> investigates layers and structures beyond representation, <Yoolryoe> approaches the same questions from a different distance through the form of landscape. Rather than presenting a definitive conclusion, the artist keeps meaning open-ended, capturing on the pictorial surface moments of sensation and perception that arise before we recognize and judge what we see.
