서희수는 홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 도예와 공예 디자인을 전공하고, 뉴욕주립대학교에서 도자조형 전공 석사과정(ceramic sculpture MFA)을 졸업했다. 차의과대학교 대학원에서 미술치료로 석사 졸업 후 박사과정을 수료했다. 뉴욕 새뮤얼 도스키 미술관과 통인화랑, 웅갤러리, 가나아트센터, 관훈갤러리 등에서 개인전을 열었으며, 다수의 단체전에 참여했다.

그는 도예가라는 고정된 범주를 넘어 도예를 기반으로 다양한 재료의 물성과 개념을 탐구하며, 설치 조형물과 페이퍼 콜라주 등 여러 매체를 접목해 자신만의 조형 언어를 구축했다. 인간 내면에 잠재된 의식적 불안과 무의식적 상처, 그리고 자생적 회복에 대한 감정을 작품으로 표현한다.

상처와 치유의 상징인 붕대를 주요 모티브로 삼아 형태를 변주하는 서희수는, 붕대를 감는 행위 자체를 치유와 소통의 시간으로 제시한다. 흙으로 만든 붕대를 계속 감아올리며 완성되는 작품은 흙과 섬유의 유연한 물성을 결합해 자연스럽고 볼륨감 있는 형태를 지향한다. 가마 속에서 붕대는 타 사라지지만 그 흔적은 남고, 작품은 오히려 더 단단하고 견고한 물질로 거듭난다. “지금 나에게 일어난 일은 분명히 이유가 있을 것이다. 나를 어떻게든 필요한 존재로 만들어 가는 과정인 것이다.” 서희수의 작업 과정은 그러한 이유를 찾아가며 ‘필요한 존재’로 완성되어 가는 여정이다.

Suh Hee Su studied ceramics and craft design at Hongik University and its graduate school, and earned an MFA in ceramic sculpture from the State University of New York. She later completed a master’s degree in art therapy at CHA University Graduate School and finished the coursework for her doctoral program. She has held solo exhibitions at venues including the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art in New York, Tongin Gallery, Woong Gallery, Gana Art Center, and Gwanhun Gallery, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions.

Moving beyond the fixed category of ceramic artist, she explores the material properties and concepts of diverse materials grounded in ceramics, integrating installation, sculptural forms, and paper collage to develop a distinctive formal language. Her work expresses conscious anxiety and unconscious wounds latent within human beings, along with emotions related to self-generated recovery.

Using bandages—symbols of injury and healing—as a central motif, Suh Hee Su varies form while presenting the act of wrapping as a duration of healing and communication. As she continuously winds clay-made bandages to complete each piece, she combines the flexible properties of clay and fiber to pursue natural, voluminous forms. In the kiln, the bandages burn away and disappear, leaving traces behind; paradoxically, the work is reborn as a firmer and more resilient material. “What has happened to me surely has a reason. It is a process of making me, in some way, a necessary being.” Her practice traces that very process—seeking those reasons and arriving at completion as a ‘necessary being.’
