니키 드 생팔은 프랑스를 대표하는 누보 레알리즘 작가이자 조각가이다. 젊은 시절 모델로 활동했으며, 이후 회화와 조각, 설치미술, 영화 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축했다. 그는 개인의 상처와 사회적 억압, 특히 여성에게 부여된 고정된 역할과 굴레를 예술을 통해 강렬하게 드러냈다.

초기 작업에는 작가가 겪은 불안과 분노, 내면의 상처가 직접적으로 반영되어 있다. 대표적인 <슈팅 페인팅>은 석고 표면에 물감 주머니를 설치한 뒤 총을 쏘아 색이 흘러내리게 하는 방식으로 제작되었으며, 억압된 감정을 해방시키는 행위이자 예술적 치유의 과정이었다.

이후 니키 드 생팔은 거대하고 풍만한 여성 조각상 <나나 Nana> 연작을 통해 자유롭고 생명력 넘치는 여성의 이미지를 제시했다. 밝은 색채와 유쾌한 형태로 이루어진 <나나>는 상처 입은 존재로서의 여성을 넘어, 스스로 움직이고 춤추며 삶을 긍정하는 주체적 존재를 상징한다. 그의 작업은 여성성과 치유, 해방의 메시지를 담아내며 오늘날까지 강렬한 울림을 전하고 있다.

Niki de Saint Phalle was a leading French Nouveau Réalisme artist and sculptor. In her early years, she worked as a fashion model before expanding her practice across painting, sculpture, installation art, and film, establishing a distinctive artistic world of her own. Through her art, she powerfully addressed personal trauma and social oppression, particularly the restrictive roles and expectations imposed on women.

Her early works directly reflected the anxiety, anger, and emotional wounds she experienced throughout her life. One of her best-known series, <Shooting Paintings>, was created by attaching bags of paint onto plaster surfaces and firing bullets at them, allowing the colors to burst and flow across the canvas. The process became both an act of releasing suppressed emotions and a form of artistic healing.

Later, Niki de Saint Phalle introduced vibrant and monumental female sculptures through her iconic <Nana> series. With their bold colors and joyful forms, the <Nana> figures moved beyond the image of wounded femininity to embody women as energetic, liberated, and self-determined beings who dance, move, and celebrate life.
