리우 웨이는 베이징에서 태어나 천안문 사태와 개혁 개방이라는 격동의 시대를 살아온 작가로, 그의 작품은 불안정한 시대적 배경을 염두에 두고 이해할 수 있다. 그는 1996년 항저우 중국미술학교를 졸업한 후, 1999년 ‘Post-Sense Sensibility’ 전시에 참여하며 전위예술 작가로서의 길을 시작했다.

그의 작품은 극단적인 경험을 통해 보는 사람들에게 강렬한 인상을 남기고, 즉흥적이고 불합리하며 직관적인 접근을 포용한다. 리우 웨이는 혼돈과 모순이 끊임없이 변하는 사회 속에서 예술가로서의 정체성을 탐구하며, 설치, 비디오, 그림, 조각 등 다양한 매체를 통해 작업을 펼친다.

그의 대표적인 프로젝트 중 하나인 ‘보라 Purple Air(2011-2012)’는 고층 건물 그래픽 요소를 묘사하며 급격한 도시화와 분리된 개인들, 디지털 코드로 둘러싸인 현대 도시의 풍경을 수직과 수평의 코드로 표현한다. 2011년에는 중국 상하이미술관에서 최연소 개인전 작가로 선정되었고, 2015년에는 베이징에서 UCCA 개인전을 열었다. 또한 한국의 플라토미술관에서는 고별 전시로 리우 웨이 초청 전시가 진행되기도 했다. 2005 베니스 비엔날레, 2006 서울 국제미디어아트 비엔날레, 상하이 비엔날레 등 다양한 국제 전시와 초대전에서 활동한 리우 웨이는 현재 중국을 대표하는 작가로서 국제적인 명성을 얻고 있다.

Liu Wei was born in Beijing and grew up during the tumultuous times of the Tiananmen Square incident and China's economic reforms. The instability he experienced during this period serves as an important key to understanding his artwork. He graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou in 1996 and began his avant-garde career by participating in the 1999 “Post-Sense Sensibility” exhibition.

His works create extreme experiences for the viewers while embracing improvisation, irrationality, and intuition. Liu Wei reflects on his artistic identity within a society filled with chaos and contradictions, working across various media, including installation, video, painting, and sculpture.

One of his famous projects, “Purple Air” (2011-2012), uses graphic elements to depict high-rise buildings, expressing the rapidly urbanizing and fragmented individuals in a modern city surrounded by digital codes. In 2011, he was selected as the youngest solo exhibition artist at the Shanghai Art Museum, and in 2015, he held a solo exhibition at UCCA in Beijing. Liu Wei has also been invited to exhibit at major international venues such as the Venice Biennale (2005), the Seoul International Media Art Biennale (2006), and the Shanghai Biennale. He is currently one of China's leading contemporary artists, gaining international acclaim.
