이배 작가는 홍익대학교 서양화과와 동 대학원을 졸업한 후 1990년 프랑스로 건너가 파리에서 작업해왔다. 그는 30년이 넘는 시간 동안 ‘숯’이라는 물성을 탐구하며 자신의 고유한 정체성을 더해 회화, 조각, 설치 등 다양한 작업을 이어가고 있다. 프랑스, 뉴욕, 청도를 오가며 숯이라는 향토적인 재료와 흑백의 서체적 추상을 통해 한국형 모노크롬 회화를 선보여 왔다.

흰 바탕 위에 강렬한 검은 획이 이루는 독특한 조화 속에서 그의 작품은 동양적인 분위기와 함께 추상과 평면성이라는 현대 미학의 중요한 흐름을 드러낸다. 검은 숯을 갈아 제작한 평면 작업부터 대형 숯을 전시장에 세우는 대형 설치 작업까지, 그는 숯이라는 재료를 다층적으로 활용한다. 작가는 “모든 것을 태우고 난 검은 숯에는 빨려 들어갈 것만 같은 근원적인 힘이 스며 있다”고 말한다.

나무로 태어나 자신의 몸을 태우고 숯이 되어 땅으로 돌아가는 순환 구조는 보는 이를 시간과 존재에 대한 성찰로 이끈다. 그는 2018년 프랑스 문화예술훈장 기사장을 수훈했고, 2000년 국립현대미술관 ‘올해의 작가상’을 수상했다. 국내를 비롯해 중국, 뉴욕, 프랑스의 유수 미술관에서 40회 이상의 개인전을 개최했으며, 2024 베니스비엔날레와 2023년 뉴욕 록펠러센터 채널가든에 설치된 ‘불로부터(Issu de Feu)’를 통해 거장으로서의 입지를 공고히 했다.

Lee Bae graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University and its graduate school, and moved to France in 1990, where he has worked in Paris ever since. For more than three decades, he has explored the materiality of charcoal, developing a singular artistic identity across painting, sculpture, and installation. Moving between France, New York, and Qingdao, he has presented a distinctly Korean form of monochrome painting through charcoal—a vernacular material—and calligraphic abstraction in black and white.

In his works, bold black strokes set against white grounds form a unique harmony that conveys both an Eastern sensibility and key currents of modern aesthetics such as abstraction and flatness. From planar works made by grinding charcoal to monumental installations that erect large charcoal forms within exhibition spaces, he employs the material in multifaceted ways. As the artist notes, “Black charcoal, after burning everything, holds an elemental force that seems to draw one in.”

The cyclical structure—born as wood, consumed by fire, transformed into charcoal, and returned to the earth—leads viewers toward reflection on time and existence. He was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in France in 2018 and received the Artist of the Year Award from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2000. With more than forty solo exhibitions at major institutions in Korea, China, New York, and France, and landmark installations including ‘Issu de Feu’ at the Channel Gardens of Rockefeller Center in New York in 2023 and participation in the 2024 Venice Biennale, Lee Bae has firmly established his stature as a master.
