김영재는 1929년 경상북도 봉화에서 태어나 대학에서 정치학을 전공했으나, 미술에 대한 열망에 이끌려 30대 중반에 홍익대학교 대학원에서 회화를 전공하게 된다. 이 시기 그는 자신의 미술 인생에 큰 영향을 준 스승 김환기 화백을 만나 본격적인 회화 세계를 구축하기 시작했다.

1960년대에는 무거운 심리 상태를 반영한 어두운 분위기의 작품을 선보였고, 1970년대에 들어서며 보다 밝은 색조와 기하학적으로 단순화된 강줄기와 주변 풍경에 집중했다. 1980년대 이후에는 ‘산’을 주요 주제로 삼아, 김영재만의 독창적인 산의 이미지를 창조해 나간다.

그의 작품에 등장하는 푸른 색감의 높고 깊은 산은 장엄하면서도 온화한 인상을 지니며 관람자에게 위안과 격려를 전한다. 거칠거나 위협적이지 않은 산 능선에는 화가의 따뜻한 시선과 마음이 담겨 있어, 일상에 지친 현대인들에게 깊은 휴식을 제공한다. 김영재는 대한민국 기독교 미술상, 구상대제전 초대작가상, 대한민국 미술인의 날 오늘의 미술상 등을 수상했으며, 1974년부터 영남대학교 회화과 교수로 재직해 1994년 정년퇴직할 때까지 후학 양성에도 헌신했다.

Kim Yung Zai was born in 1929 in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Although he initially studied political science at university, his passion for art led him, in his mid-thirties, to pursue painting at the graduate program of Hongik University. During this period, he encountered his most influential mentor, Kim Whanki, marking a pivotal turning point in his artistic journey.

In the 1960s, Kim presented works characterized by dark tones that conveyed a heavy psychological atmosphere. During the 1970s, his focus shifted toward brighter palettes and geometrically simplified river landscapes and surrounding scenery. Entering the 1980s, he became deeply absorbed in the motif of the “mountain,” developing a distinctive and personal visual language centered on this theme.

The majestic blue mountains that appear in his paintings offer viewers a sense of comfort and quiet encouragement. Neither rugged nor threatening, the gentle ridgelines embody the artist’s warm and contemplative spirit, providing profound rest for those weary of modern life. Kim Yung Zai received numerous honors, including the Korean Christian Art Award, the Invitational Artist Award at the Figurative Art Grand Exhibition, and the Today’s Art Award on Korea Artists’ Day. Alongside his artistic career, he served as a professor in the Department of Painting at Yeungnam University from 1974 until his retirement in 1994, dedicating himself to the education of younger generations.
