런던에서 태어난 줄리안 오피는 앤디워홀 이후 최고의 팝 아티스트로 불린다. 그는 영국 현대미술의 주역을 여럿 배출한 골드스미스대학에서 일찌감치 두각을 나타냈다. 그는 작품의 모티프인 인물이나 풍경의 디테일을 과감하게 생략하며 굵고 검은 선으로 단순화한다.

이러한 이미지는 단순히 그림에 머물지 않고 초대형 설치미술, LED 전광판, LCD, 렌티큘러, 판화 등의 다양한 매체로 구현된다. 또한 전통과 최첨단 디지털기술을 접목하며 다양한 기법을 실험한다. 그 과정에서 자신만의 이미지를 구축, 독창적인 언어로 발전시켜 왔다.

Born in London, Julian Opie is regarded as one of the greatest pop artists since Andy Warhol. He rose to prominence early on at Goldsmiths, University of London, an institution renowned for producing many leading figures of British contemporary art. Opie boldly eliminates detailed features of figures and landscapes—his primary motifs—reducing them to simplified forms outlined with thick black lines.

These images extend beyond painting to take shape across a wide range of media, including large-scale installations, LED billboards, LCD screens, lenticular works, and prints. By combining traditional artistic approaches with cutting-edge digital technologies, he continually experiments with diverse techniques. Through this process, Opie has developed a highly distinctive visual language of his own.

The figures he creates, completed with just a few lines and shapes, reflect the anonymity of modern individuals while simultaneously being perceived as lively, approachable pop icons.
