Jean-Michel Basquiat was a leading contemporary artist who defined the New York art scene of the 1980s. Moving between museums and galleries in Manhattan and Brooklyn from a young age, he developed a keen artistic sensibility and first gained recognition on the streets as a member of the graffiti collective SAMO in the late 1970s. Expanding his practice into painting, he collaborated and exchanged ideas with influential artists such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. In 1985, he rose to international prominence after appearing on the cover of The New York Times.

Basquiat’s works are characterized by a distinctive visual language that combines graffiti, vivid symbols, raw lines, anatomical imagery, and philosophical text. Freely traversing image and language, abstraction and figuration, history and contemporary critique, he transformed the energy of street graffiti into powerful painterly expression.
