황란 HWANG RAN
황란 작가는 미국 뉴욕에 있는 스쿨 오브 비주얼 아트를 수학하고 뉴욕에서 활동하다가 지금은 뉴욕과 서울을 오가며 다양한 시도와 작품 제작에 매진하고 있다. 크리스터 비즈(beads)나 단추를 박아 완성된 형상들은 화려하기 그지없다.
그러나 그 이면에는 단추 하나하나를 원하는 색깔(일반적인 레드와는 다른 핑크 레드)로 입하고, 손톱에 피멍이 들도록 망치질해야 하는 고된 노동이 숨어 있다. 이런 진한 과정을 거친 그녀의 작품은 화려한 인생을 만들기 위해 피나는 노력을 하는 우리네 삶의 모습과 닮았다. 작가는 핀을 두드림으로 삶에 대한 성찰과 그의 작품을 대하는 사람들의 마음을 다독여 명상과 치유의 세계로 유도한다.
황란 작가는 두바이 레일라 헬러 갤러리, 미국 플로리다 베이커 박물관 등 세계 곳곳에서 여러 개인전과 단체전에 참여한 바 있으며 그의 작품은 현재 페이스북 본사, 중국 데지 아트 미술관, 미국 휴스턴 박물관 등 세계 여러 곳에 소장되어 있다.
Hwang Ran studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and began her artistic career in the city. She now divides her time between New York and Seoul, continuously exploring new artistic approaches and expanding her practice. Her dazzling works, composed of crystal beads and buttons, captivate viewers with their brilliant surfaces.
Beneath this brilliance, however, lies an intensive and meticulous process. Each button is individually painted in carefully selected shades—such as a distinctive pinkish red rather than a standard red—and painstakingly hammered into place by hand, often leaving bruises on the artist's fingertips. This labor-intensive process reflects the effort and perseverance required to create a beautiful life. Through the repetitive act of hammering pins, Hwang Ran contemplates life itself while inviting viewers into a space of meditation, comfort, and healing.
Hwang Ran has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the world, including at Leila Heller Gallery in Dubai and The Baker Museum in Florida, USA. Her works are held in the collections of major institutions such as the Facebook Headquarters, Deji Art Museum in China, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
