이페로는 먹고(Eat), 그리고(Paint), 사랑하는(Love) 삶의 모습을 화폭에 담는 작가로, 서울대학교 미술대학 동양화과를 졸업한 후 다수의 개인전과 그룹전을 통해 왕성한 활동을 이어가고 있다. 그는 일상의 행위와 감정을 회화적 언어로 풀어내며 삶의 단면을 응시한다.

작가는 주로 음식을 먹는 행위를 테마로 다채로운 삶의 모습을 그려낸다. 이는 특정 미각을 시각화하거나 욕망과 의지의 기호를 과시하는 데 그치지 않고, 오히려 욕망과 의지의 탑을 쌓는 일이 얼마나 부질없는지를 드러내고자 한다. 애써 세밀하게 묘사한 대상을 한순간의 붓질로 긁어내고 거칠게 밀어내며, 화려하고 밝았던 색을 혼탁하게 만들고 분명했던 형상은 흔적으로 남긴다.

이페로의 화면 속 단맛 뒤에는 언제나 쓴맛이 서려 있다. 그저 아름답고 달콤하기만 한 것은 이 세계에 존재하지 않는다는 듯, 그는 인생의 찬란함 이면에 자리한 허무와 초라함을 작품에 투영한다. 무엇인지 명확히 규정할 수 없지만 여전히 모호한 것이 삶의 모습이듯, 뭉개지고 지워진 화면 안에서 명징한 대비가 펼쳐진다. 작가는 관객에게 먹을거리를 건네듯 미각의 여운을 남기고, 동시에 본질에 대한 사유를 마음에 머물게 한다.

Eparo is an artist who depicts the acts of eating, painting, and loving as reflections of life on the canvas. After graduating from the Department of Oriental Painting at Seoul National University, he has actively presented his work through numerous solo and group exhibitions.

Centering on the act of eating, Eparo portrays diverse aspects of everyday life. Rather than simply visualizing taste or exuberantly displaying symbols of desire and will, his work reveals the futility of constructing towers of desire and intention. Meticulously rendered forms are scraped away with a single brushstroke, colors once vivid become muddied, and clear shapes are reduced to lingering traces.

Beneath the sweetness depicted in Eparo’s paintings lies a distinct bitterness. As if to suggest that nothing in this world is purely beautiful or sweet, he projects the emptiness and fragility that exist behind life’s brilliance. Much like life itself—indefinable yet persistently ambiguous—his smeared and erased images unfold stark contrasts. Offering viewers the imagery of food, he leaves a lingering aftertaste while simultaneously inviting contemplation on the essence of existence.
