The invitational solo exhibition “East Side Story” by Kim Myung-sik is presented at Gallery We in Yongin from May 2 – May 31, 2018, celebrating the artist's 70th birthday and 50 years of artistic practice. Featuring approximately 30 works, primarily recent paintings, the exhibition highlights his signature series inspired by the vibrant energy and diverse communities of New York. Transforming houses glimpsed through subway windows into symbolic representations of people, the artist explores themes of cultural diversity, harmony, and coexistence. Through bold compositions, distinctive colors, and richly textured surfaces, his paintings express a sense of peace and hope while reflecting the continuing evolution of his artistic vision.

김명식 고희 기념 초대전 《East Side Story》는 경기도 용인 갤러리위에서 2018년 5월 2일부터 5월 31일까지 진행된다. 이번 전시는 작가의 70세를 기념하며 50년 화업을 돌아보는 자리로, 근작을 중심으로 한 약 30점의 작품을 선보인다. 1990년대 말 뉴욕 여행에서 영감을 받아 탄생한 '이스트 사이드 스토리' 연작은 전철 창밖으로 보이는 작은 집들을 다양한 인종과 개성을 지닌 사람들의 모습으로 치환하며, 서로 다른 존재가 조화를 이루며 살아가는 삶의 풍경을 표현한다. 대담한 화면 구성과 독창적인 색채, 깊이 있는 마티에르를 통해 평화와 희망의 메시지를 전하는 작품들은 오랜 시간 이어온 작가의 예술적 탐구와 변화하는 조형 세계를 조명한다.
