양지운은 전통 상감기법에서 착안한 ‘금연마상감’ 기법으로 도자 작업을 전개하는 작가이다. 조상들의 전통 기법을 작가만의 고유한 방식으로 재해석함으로써 단절된 시간을 현재로 잇고, 전통과 현대가 공존하는 조형 언어를 구축한다.
작품에 사용되는 표면 장식 기법은 고려 시대 상감청자의 상감기법을 근간으로 독창적으로 고안된 것으로, 주재료로 금(金)을 사용해 ‘금연마상감’이라 명명했다. 다양한 색감으로 조합된 흙과 흙 부스러기가 자연스러운 흙의 결을 형성하고, 그 틈을 금으로 채우기 위해 전체를 금으로 도포해 소성한 뒤 표면을 연마하는 과정을 거친다.
양지운은 문화예술발전 유공자로 문화체육관광부 ‘오늘의 젊은 예술가상’을 수상했으며, 프랑스 샤넬 본사와 LVMH 호텔에 작품이 소장되며 주목을 받았다. 그의 작업은 원석을 연상시키는 물성과 깊이를 지니며, 향유자들이 일상 속에서 현대화된 전통과 문화를 발견하고 예술을 누릴 수 있는 고부가가치의 공예품으로서 삶의 질을 풍요롭게 한다.
Yang Ji Woon is a ceramic artist known for developing the “Gold-Polished Inlay” technique, inspired by traditional Korean sanggam inlay methods. By reinterpreting ancestral techniques through her own distinctive approach, she bridges fragmented time, connecting tradition with the present.
The surface decoration seen in her works is rooted in the inlay techniques of Goryeo celadon, reimagined through an original process using gold as the primary material—hence the name “Gold-Polished Inlay.” Clay and fragments of differently colored earth naturally form textured surfaces, which are then fully coated with gold, fired, and meticulously polished to reveal gold-filled lines within the clay’s grain.
Yang Ji Woon has been recognized as a contributor to cultural and artistic development and received the “Today’s Young Artist Award” from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Her works are held in prestigious collections such as the headquarters of Chanel and LVMH hotels in France. Often likened to raw gemstones, her ceramics allow viewers to encounter modernized tradition in everyday life, offering high-value craft objects that enrich cultural experience and enhance the quality of life.
