민화 작가 엄미금은 현대 회화와 동양 전통 미술 장르의 경계를 허무는 작업을 이어오고 있다. 그는 한국 전통 민화를 기반으로 하되 현대적 감각을 접목해 자유로운 예술 세계를 구축하며, 국내외에서 왕성한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

엄미금은 독일 뮌헨에서 열린 제20회 Hotel Maximilian Bad Griesbach Golf Resort 전시(2023), 제19회 Galerie Duruduru 초대전(2022), 제18회 Galerie Hotel Maximilian 특별전 등 다수의 해외 전시에 참여했으며, 국내에서도 활발한 전시 활동을 통해 전통 민화의 현대적 확장을 선보여왔다.

지난 30여 년간 전통 민화 작업을 지속해온 그는 그 명맥을 단순하고 절제된 조형미로 재결합해 캔버스 위로 확장한다. 특히 책가도에 주목해 온 작가는 동서고금의 지혜를 담은 ‘인문 추상’으로 이를 재해석하며, 동양적이면서도 현대적인 조화를 장르와 사조에 국한되지 않은 예술 세계로 꽃피운다. 그의 작품은 공주민속극박물관, 목인박물관, 국회 문화체육관광위원장실, 조지아 대통령 사저 등에 소장되어 있다.

Um Mi Keum is a minhwa artist whose practice dissolves the boundaries between contemporary painting and traditional East Asian art. Grounded in Korean folk painting, her work integrates a modern sensibility to create a free and expansive artistic language, developed through active engagement both in Korea and abroad.

She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Munich, Germany, including the 20th exhibition at Hotel Maximilian Bad Griesbach Golf Resort (2023), the 19th invitational exhibition at Galerie Duruduru (2022), and the 18th special exhibition at Galerie Hotel Maximilian. Alongside her international presence, she continues to actively present her work in Korea, expanding the possibilities of traditional minhwa in a contemporary context.

With over thirty years of dedication to traditional minhwa, Um Mi Keum reconfigures its lineage through simplified and restrained formal aesthetics, extending it onto canvas. Focusing particularly on chaekgado, she reinterprets the genre as “humanistic abstraction,” encapsulating wisdom from across time and cultures. Through this approach, her work blossoms into an artistic world that is both Eastern and contemporary, unconstrained by genre or movement. Her works are held in collections including the Gongju Folk Drama Museum, Mokin Museum, the Office of the Chair of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, and the official residence of the President of Georgia.
