Robert Indiana was an American contemporary artist best known as a leading figure of the Pop Art movement. Born in Indiana in 1928, he graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and became active in New York during the 1960s, where he developed his distinctive artistic language.

Alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Indiana is regarded as a central figure in American Pop Art. While many of his contemporaries drew inspiration from commercial imagery, Indiana adopted a unique approach that emphasized autobiographical elements, words, numbers, and symbolic messages. His iconic work <LOVE> originated in 1964 when he was commissioned to design a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), presenting the word “love” in bold red, blue, and green hues.
