남정 박노수 화백은 충남 연기에서 태어나 1940년 청전 이상범의 문하에서 본격적인 작품 공부를 시작했다. 청주상업학교 시절부터 그의 재능은 빛을 발하기 시작했고, 국전에서 국무총리상, 특선, 대통령상 등을 수상하며 이름을 널리 알렸다. 이화여자대학교와 서울대학교에서 교수로 재직한 뒤, 서울대학교 명예교수가 되었으며 국전 초대작가, 심사위원, 운영위원으로도 활동했다. 1995년에는 ‘자랑스러운 서울시민 600인’에 선정되기도 했다.

이러한 다양한 경력을 통해 그는 정식 아카데미 교육을 받은 첫 세대 한국화가 중 가장 유명하고 성공한 작가로 자리매김했다. 박노수의 초기 작품에서는 추상 인물 표현과 대담한 구도가 돋보이며, 산수화의 독자적인 경지를 개척했다. 그는 전통적인 화제를 다루면서도 간결한 운필과 강렬한 색감, 대담한 터치로 독특한 화풍을 구축했다.

Park No Soo, also known by his pen name Namjeong, was born in Yeongi, Chungcheongnam-do, and began his formal artistic training in 1940 under the guidance of Cheongjeon Lee Sang-beom. His talent became evident during his years at Cheongju Commercial School, and he gained widespread recognition after receiving honors such as the Prime Minister’s Award, Special Selection, and the Presidential Award at the National Art Exhibition. He later served as a professor at Ewha Womans University and Seoul National University, became Professor Emeritus at Seoul National University, and was active as an invited artist, judge, and committee member of the National Art Exhibition. In 1995, he was selected as one of the “600 Proud Citizens of Seoul.”

Through these varied achievements, he established himself as one of the most renowned and successful artists among the first generation of Korean painters to receive formal academic training. His early works are marked by abstract figure expressions and bold compositions, opening a distinctive path in landscape painting. While engaging with traditional subjects, he developed a unique style characterized by concise brushwork, intense colors, and daring touches.

He is especially celebrated for landscape paintings that sensuously employ deep indigo tones rarely seen in traditional ink painting, realizing a modern aesthetic within tradition. His works are distinguished by noble and vigorous brushstrokes, and his frequent use of diagonal compositions effectively draws viewers’ gazes into the painting. His innovative approach is regarded as having opened new horizons in Korean painting, contributing significantly to the modern reinterpretation of traditional beauty.
