남종현(1971-)은 달항아리, 책가도, 꼭두, 의자 등 기물의 시간을 기록하는 작업을 해온 작가이다. 전통 한지에 인화하는 사진 작업을 통해 그는 빛과 그림자를 의도적으로 제거하고 여백을 강조하며, 사물의 본질과 그 안에 축적된 시간의 흔적에 집중한다. 그의 사진 속 사물은 단순히 기능의 대상이 아니라, 한 시대를 지나온 존재로 재조명된다.

남종현의 작업에서 중요한 매개는 한지다. 닥나무를 베고 삶고 두드리는 수많은 과정을 거쳐 완성되는 한지는 과거와 현재를 잇는 물질이며, 시간의 흔적을 받아들이는 표면이다. 그는 이 한지 위에 사물을 인화하여, 사진과 회화, 기록과 감상의 경계를 유연하게 확장하며 작품을 만들어낸다.

그는 이스티투토 이탈리아노 디 포토그라피아 밀라노(Istituto Italiano di Fotografia Milano)에서 수학했으며, SMP 갤러리(2026 예정), 갤러리 마크(현. 갤러리 기와, 2023), 아자부주반 갤러리(2018) 등 국내외 개인전에서 활동을 이어가고 있다. 또한 《빛아, 아 빛!》(2025, 나인원 한남, 서울), 《余白に沁みた古憬》(2020, 갤러리 렌이, 가마쿠라) 등 주요 단체전에 참여했으며, 그의 작품은 한국수출입은행, 우란문화재단, DB그룹, SM면세점 등에 소장되어 있다.

Nam Jong Hyun (1971-) is an artist who records the time of objects such as dalhangari (traditional white porcelain jars), books, clocks, and chairs through photography. In his photographic works, he intentionally removes the essential elements of light and shadow, focusing on the essence of the object and the traces of time accumulated within it by emphasizing negative space. In his photographs, the objects are no longer mere functional items but are seen as entities that have passed through time.

The key medium in Nam Jong Hyun’s work is hanji, traditional Korean paper made from the bark of the mulberry tree, which undergoes numerous processes of boiling, beating, and drying. Hanji serves as a bridge between the past and the present, becoming a surface that absorbs traces of time. By printing objects onto hanji, he flexibly expands the boundaries between photography and painting, as well as between documentation and contemplation.

Nam Jong Hyun studied at the Istituto Italiano di Fotografia Milano. He continues his active career through solo exhibitions at galleries such as SMP Gallery (2026 planned), Gallery Mark (currently Gallery Giwa, 2023), and Azabu Juban Gallery (2018). He has also participated in major group exhibitions, including "Light, Oh Light!" (2025, Nine One Hanam, Seoul) and "余白に沁みた古憬" (2020, Gallery Ren'i, Kamakura). His works are housed in collections such as the Export-Import Bank of Korea, Ulan Cultural Foundation, DB Group, and SM Duty Free.
