러시아 벨라루스에서 태어난 마르크 샤갈은 러시아의 민간 설화와 유대인의 생활상, 성서에서 영감을 받아 인간의 근원적인 향수와 동경, 꿈, 그리움, 사랑 등을 환상적인 색채로 표현했다. 내면의 시적 감성을 열정적이고 서정적으로 표현한 작품들로 샤갈은 오늘날 가장 인기 있는 근대 회화가 중 한 사람이다. 신앙심 깊은 유대인 가정에서 자라 독창적이고 상상력이 풍부한 작품을 많이 남겼다.

그는 첫 미술 교습을 펜(Penn)에게 받았고 상트 페테르부르크 왕실미술학교와 즈반체바 미술학교를 다녔다. 혁명의 소용돌이 속에 러시아를 떠나 베를린을 거쳐 파리에 정착해 본격적인 화가생활을 하며 아폴리나이어, 들로네, 레저, 모딜리아니, 로트 등 젊은 아방가르드 화가들을 만났다. 샤갈의 회화는 표현주의나 입체파, 추상미술과 같은 1914년 이전의 예술운동을 반영하면서 독자성을 획득했다.

1941년부터 1948년까지 나치를 피해 미국에 체류하기도 했지만 주로 파리를 무대로 활동했다. 샤갈에게 파리는 프랑스의 비텝스크였다. “파리에서 나는 미술학교에 다니지 않았다. 그 도시 안의 모든 것, 하루하루, 모든 순간이 다 내게 스승이었다.” 파리를 사랑하고 벨라루스의 고향을 동경한 샤갈은 회화뿐 아니라 도자기, 판화, 건축 모자이크, 파리 오페라극장과 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 오페라하우스의 장식, 스테인드글라스 등 다양한 장르의 작품을 남겼다. 샤갈이 남긴 유명한 말이 있다. “우리의 삶에는 오직 한가지 색채만이 있다. 그것은 사랑의 색채이다.”

Born in Belarus, Russia, Marc Chagall drew inspiration from Russian folk tales, Jewish life, and the Bible to express fundamental human longing, nostalgia, dreams, yearning, and love through fantastical colors. Through works that convey inner poetic sensibility with passion and lyricism, Chagall is regarded today as one of the most beloved figures in modern painting. Raised in a deeply religious Jewish family, he produced a wealth of imaginative and highly original works.

He received his first art instruction from Penn and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg as well as the Zvantseva School of Art. Amid the turbulence of revolution, he left Russia and settled in Paris via Berlin, where he began his full artistic career and encountered young avant-garde artists such as Apollinaire, Delaunay, Léger, Modigliani, and Lhote. Chagall’s painting reflects pre-1914 art movements such as Expressionism, Cubism, and abstraction, while establishing a unique and independent visual language.

From 1941 to 1948, he stayed in the United States to escape the Nazis, but Paris remained the primary stage of his artistic activity. For Chagall, Paris was the French Vitebsk. “In Paris I did not attend an art school. Everything in that city—each day, every moment—was my teacher.” Loving Paris while longing for his Belarusian homeland, Chagall worked not only in painting but also in ceramics, printmaking, architectural mosaics, decorations for the Paris Opera and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, and stained glass. A famous quote by Chagall remains: “In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.”
