마오쉬호이는 충칭에서 태어나 현재 쿤밍에 거주하고 있는 작가로, 1982년 운남예술대학에서 유화를 전공한 후 쿤밍에서 필름회사의 아트디렉터로 활동했다. 그는 판더하이, 장 샤오강 등과 함께 ‘새 콘크리트 이미지(상해, 1985)’라는 중국 최초의 자체자금 전시회를 조직하며 중요한 역할을 했다. 이 전시회는 난징, 쿤밍, 충칭 등으로 전파되며 남서부 지역 젊은 작가들의 작품을 포함하게 되었다.

1986년에는 ‘85년 뉴 웨이브 예술의 대규모 슬라이드 전시회’에서 남서부 지역 작가들의 작품을 소개하며 판더하이, 장 샤오강, 예이용칭과 함께 남서부 예술연구그룹을 결성했다. 마오쉬호이의 작품은 중국 현대미술의 큰 흐름인 냉소적 리얼리즘이나 정치적 의미를 담은 팝아트와는 다르게, 내면세계와 일상적인 사물들을 통해 자아를 탐구하는 작업을 특징으로 한다.

그의 작품에서 의자, 가위, 자전거 등 기물의 초상은 사회와 개인에 대한 메시지를 담고 있다. 형식적으로는 기하학적 추상처럼 보이는 가위는 존재의 방향, 펴고 접은 모양, 질감, 색, 곡선과 직선, 선명함과 흐릿함, 면, 빛과 그림자 등 미묘한 언어를 통해 침묵 속에 숨겨진 열정, 충동, 절제, 묵상, 기도 등을 표현한다.

Mao Xuhui, born in Chongqing and currently residing in Kunming, studied oil painting at Yunnan Arts University in 1982 and later became the art director at a film company in Kunming. He played a significant role in organizing China’s first self-funded exhibition titled "New Concrete Images" in 1985, alongside artists such as Pan Dahai and Zhang Xiaogang. This exhibition later expanded to include works by young artists from Southwest China, spreading to Nanjing, Kunming, and Chongqing.

In 1986, Mao participated in the "85 New Wave Art Large-Scale Slide Exhibition," which introduced works from Southwest China and helped form the Southwest Art Research Group with Pan Dahai, Zhang Xiaogang, and Ye Yongqing. Mao Xuhui’s works diverge from the dominant trends of Chinese contemporary art, which are often marked by cynical realism and politically charged pop art. Instead, his work focuses on the exploration of the inner world and the expression of self through everyday objects.

His works, such as portraits of everyday items like chairs, scissors, and bicycles, reflect on both society and the individual. The scissors, though appearing to be geometric abstraction, reveal subtle language through the direction of existence, their open and closed shapes, texture, color, curves and straight lines, clarity and blur, planes, light, and shadows. His works convey the silence that contains passion, impulse, restraint, contemplation, and prayer.
