‘보리밭 작가’라 불리는 이숙자는 홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 동양화를 전공했다. 1970년대 후반부터 일관되게 한국적인 정서가 담겨있는 보리밭을 다양한 기법으로 표현했다. 특히 작품 속 보리는 마치 화면 밖으로 뛰쳐나올 듯 톡톡 불거져 있는데, 이러한 부조 기법을 한국 채색화에 처음으로 도입하여 독창적 표현 방식을 확립했다.

미술의 소재로 주목받지 못했던 보리밭을 회화의 대상으로 승화시키고 놀라운 조형성을 획득해 보여줌으로써 새로운 경지를 개척했다. 그는 홍익대학교 미대 시절부터 한국화의 사실적 채색에 천착해 왔으며, 한국 채색화의 전통을 계승하고 현대적으로 발전시키기 위해 일관된 노력을 해왔다.

수십 번의 덧칠을 거듭해야 원하는 색채를 드러내는 재료의 속성 때문에 오랜 작업 시간과 장인적 기질을 요구한다. 그의 작업 방식은 몇 년에 한 작품을 완성할 정도로 열정적이면서 견고하고 집요함을 가진 것으로 유명하다. ‘이브의 보리밭 시리즈’는 보리밭의 소재에 여성의 누드를 등장시켜, 당당하고 자신감에 찬 여성의 표정으로 여린 보리밭을 강하고 긍정적인 정서로 변환시킨다. 현재도 왕성한 작품 활동을 통해 한국 채색화의 거장 이숙자의 실험은 계속되고 있다.

Lee Sook Ja, known as the “Barley Field Artist,” majored in Oriental painting at Hongik University and its graduate school. Since the late 1970s, she has consistently depicted barley fields imbued with distinctly Korean sensibilities using a variety of techniques. Notably, the barley in her works appears to bulge forward as if leaping out of the canvas; by introducing relief techniques into Korean color painting for the first time, she established a highly original mode of expression.

By elevating barley fields—previously overlooked as a subject in art—into a painterly theme and revealing their remarkable formal potential, she opened up new artistic territory. Since her student days at Hongik University, she has been deeply committed to realistic coloring in Korean painting, making sustained efforts to inherit and contemporize the tradition of Korean color painting.

Because the materials require dozens of layers of paint to achieve the desired colors, her practice demands long working hours and a craftsmanlike dedication. Her working method is renowned for its passion, solidity, and persistence, often taking years to complete a single piece. In the “Eve’s Barley Field” series, the inclusion of female nudes within the barley fields transforms the gentle landscape into one charged with strength and positive emotion, expressed through confident and self-assured female figures. Through her continued prolific practice, Lee Sook Ja’s experimentation as a master of Korean color painting carries on today.
