이상화 작가는 1988년 서울 출생으로 예원학교를 거쳐 서울예고 미술과를 졸업했다. 이후 중국 중앙미술학원 유화과에 유학생 중 수석으로 입학해 학사 및 석사학위를 취득했다. 2019년 중국 건국 70주년 기념 초청전에 참여하는 등 한국과 중국을 오가며 활발한 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다.

그는 ‘완전한 자유’라는 주제를 중심으로 작업을 전개하고 있다. 불완전한 인간이 스스로의 노력만으로 완전한 자유에 도달하는 것은 불가능하다는 인식에서 출발해, 인간의 불완전성을 자각하고 받아들이는 과정 속에서 보다 근원적인 진리에 다가갈 수 있다고 믿는다.

이상화의 작품 세계는 이러한 사유를 바탕으로, 존재의 한계와 자유에 대한 질문을 회화적으로 풀어내며 인간 내면의 성찰을 조용히 드러낸다.

Lee Sang Hwa was born in Seoul in 1988. He graduated from the art department of Seoul Arts High School after attending Yewon School, and later entered the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China as the top-ranked international student, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He has remained actively engaged in artistic practice between Korea and China, including participation in an invited exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 2019.

His work centers on the theme of “absolute freedom.” He believes that it is impossible for imperfect human beings to attain complete freedom through effort alone, and that a deeper truth can be reached through recognizing and accepting human imperfection.

Based on this line of thought, Lee Sang Hwa develops a painterly language that reflects on the limits of existence and the nature of freedom, quietly revealing an inner process of contemplation.
