이준원 작가의 작품은 인간이라는 종의 보편적 서사와 개별적 존재가 교차하는 지점에서 출발한다. 오랜 시간 축적되어온 신화적 원형의 이야기와, 반복되는 역사 속에서 고군분투하는 오늘날 개인의 투쟁과 의지의 흔적이 화면 위에서 중첩된다. 그의 캔버스에 등장하는 반추상적 형상들은 손, 발, 장기, 근육, 눈 등을 연상시키는 객체들로 서로 얽히며 격렬한 장면을 형성하고, 극복과 저항, 미래를 향한 염원과 같은 생의 에너지를 분출한다.

작가는 이러한 형상들을 ‘소환’했다고 표현한다. 드로잉이나 스케치 없이 즉흥적으로 그리는 방식은 추상표현주의를 떠올리게 하지만, 물리적 우연에 기대지 않는다는 점에서 차이를 지닌다. 그는 내면의 수련을 통해 이미 생성된 존재들의 에너지를 화면 위로 조심스럽게 끌어올린다. 그렇게 축적된 인간의 서사는 오늘을 살아가는 개인의 대항과 저항, 그리고 극복의 의지로 응결되어 화폭에 새겨진다.

이준원(b.1983–)은 중앙대학교 미술대학 시각디자인학과를 졸업했다. 디자인과 광고 업계에서 활동하던 중 예술에 대한 갈증을 느끼고 작가의 길로 전향했다. 데뷔 이후 여러 매체를 통해 소개되며 포르투갈 전 경제 부통령을 비롯한 국내외 컬렉터들의 주목을 받았다. K현대미술관, CICA 미술관, 아산 당림미술관, 금산갤러리, OKNP, 국영미술관(프랑스), 빌라데쟈(프랑스), Western Gallery(미국), K&P Gallery(미국), ASP Gallery(호주) 등에서 개인전을 개최하며 활발히 활동해왔다. 또한 KAPA 미국 뉴저지주 하원의원상 최우수상, 앙데팡당 2019 KOREA 미술대전 특선, ASYAAF 히든아티스트 등에 선정되며 탄탄한 입지를 구축하고 있다.

Lee Junwon’s work begins at the intersection of the universal narrative of humankind and the individual existence. Archetypal stories accumulated over time—mythic narratives that traverse history—overlap with the traces of struggle and will embodied by individuals living through the repetitions of history today. On his canvas, semi-abstract forms resembling hands, feet, organs, muscles, and eyes intertwine to create intense scenes that radiate the energy of resistance, endurance, and aspiration toward the future.

The artist describes these forms as having been “summoned.” Although his spontaneous method of painting without preparatory drawings may recall Abstract Expressionism, it differs in that it does not rely on physical chance. Through inner discipline, Lee carefully brings forth energies of already-formed beings onto the canvas. The accumulated narratives of humanity thus condense into the resistance, defiance, and will to overcome that characterize the contemporary individual.

Lee Junwon (b.1983–) graduated from Chung-Ang University with a degree in Visual Design. After working in the design and advertising industry, he turned to art, driven by an unfulfilled creative longing. Since his debut, his work has been introduced through various media outlets and has attracted attention from prominent collectors, including the former Vice Prime Minister of Portugal. He has held solo exhibitions at institutions including K Museum of Contemporary Art, CICA Museum, Asan Dangnim Museum, Geumsan Gallery, OKNP, Musée National (France), Villa des Arts (France), Western Gallery (USA), K&P Gallery (USA), and ASP Gallery (Australia). He has received the Grand Prize from the Korean American Professional Artists Association (New Jersey State Assembly Award), Special Prize at the 2019 Korea Indépendants Art Competition, and was selected as a Hidden Artist at ASYAAF, establishing a strong and distinctive presence in the contemporary art scene.
