이돈아는 전통 민화와 길상화의 요소를 현대적 감각으로 재해석하는 작가이다. 이화여자대학교를 졸업한 뒤 중앙대학교 교육대학원에서 미술교육을 전공했으며, 뉴욕 SVA와 NYU에서의 연수 과정을 통해 국제적인 시각을 확장했다.

2019년에는 KT&G의 3·1운동 및 대한민국 임시정부 수립 100주년 캠페인 선정 작가로 활동했으며, 2018년 7월 갤러리 현대에서 열린 화조도(花鳥圖) 전시에서는 유일한 현대 작가로 참여해 주목을 받았다. 그의 작품은 유년 시절 아버지로부터 전해진 전통에 대한 애정과, 성인이 된 후 가족의 이민으로 인해 생겨난 그리움이 어우러져 따뜻함과 희망의 메시지를 전한다.

기하도형과 길상화의 도상은 작가의 삶을 표현하는 주요한 매개체로 자리 잡았으며, ‘Time & Space’ 시리즈에서는 이 요소들이 융합되어 관람객의 행복을 기원하는 상징적 역할을 수행한다. 이돈아는 사진과 컴퓨터, 때로는 3D 기술을 활용해 전통 기법과 현대 기술이 조화를 이루는 신비로운 작품 세계를 구축하며, 화조도 모티브를 통해 화사한 색감과 친근한 정서를 더한다. 관객들이 그의 작품을 통해 과거와 현재, 미래의 자아를 성찰하며 기존 민화에서는 경험할 수 없었던 새로운 미적 세계를 탐험하기를 기대한다.

Lee Don Ah is an artist who reinterprets elements of traditional Korean minhwa and auspicious paintings through a contemporary lens. After graduating from Ewha Womans University, she majored in art education at the Graduate School of Education at Chung-Ang University, and further developed an international sensibility through training programs at SVA and NYU in New York.

In 2019, she was selected as an artist for KT&G’s campaign commemorating the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and the establishment of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea. She also gained attention in July 2018 as the only contemporary artist invited to participate in the Hwajodo (Flower-and-Bird Painting) exhibition at Gallery Hyundai. Her works convey messages of warmth and hope, shaped by her childhood exposure to her father’s love for tradition and the sense of longing that emerged after her family’s immigration.

Geometric forms and auspicious iconography serve as key visual devices through which Lee expresses her life experiences. In the “Time & Space” series, these elements converge to celebrate and bless the happiness of viewers. Utilizing photography, digital tools, and occasionally 3D technology, she pursues a mysterious artistic world where traditional techniques harmonize with contemporary methods. By frequently employing the Hwajodo motif, she adds vivid color and approachability, inviting audiences to reflect on their past, present, and future selves while exploring a new aesthetic realm beyond conventional minhwa.
