이봉섭 교수는 1970년대부터 한국 그래픽 디자인의 정체성과 방향성을 고민하며 활동해왔다. 1979년 영남대학교 교수로 부임한 이후 35년간 후진 양성을 위해 힘써왔으며, 정년을 맞아 이앙갤러리에서 기념전을 열었다. 그는 이를 계기로 다시 작업에 몰두하겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.

유교 사상이 뿌리 깊은 집안에서 유년 시절을 보낸 그는 짚신과 그릇 등 당시 일상에서 접했던 생필품들의 디자인에 깊은 인상을 받았고, 그 속에서 한국의 시각 이미지를 발굴하고자 했다. 오랫동안 황학동 벼룩시장을 다니며 물건을 수집해 왔으며, 우리의 오래된 생활용품을 어떻게 세계적인 이미지로 만들 수 있을지에 대해 지속적으로 고민해 왔다.

단순해야만 세계적으로 통하는 보편적인 시각 언어가 될 수 있다고 믿은 그는 원, 사각형, 삼각형 등 기하학을 기반으로 한 시각 언어를 통해 자신의 작업을 전개해 왔다.

Professor Lee Bong Seob has been actively engaged since the 1970s in exploring the identity and direction of Korean graphic design. After joining Yeungnam University as a professor in 1979, he devoted thirty-five years to nurturing the next generation, and upon his retirement, held a commemorative exhibition at Iang Gallery. This marked a new starting point from which he expressed his determination to immerse himself once again in creative work.

Growing up in a family deeply rooted in Confucian values, he was strongly influenced by the design of everyday necessities he encountered in his childhood, such as straw shoes and household vessels. From these objects, he sought to discover distinctly Korean visual imagery. He spent many years frequenting the Hwanghak-dong flea market, collecting objects and reflecting on how traditional Korean daily goods could be transformed into images with global resonance.

Believing that simplicity is essential for a visual language to achieve universal appeal, he has pursued an approach grounded in geometry, expressing his ideas through fundamental forms such as circles, squares, and triangles.
