곽훈은 동양의 정신세계를 담아내는 작업을 통해 해외 미술계, 특히 미국에서 인정받아온 작가로, 물질주의적 주류에 대한 문화적 도전을 제시하며 가장 한국적인 미감을 선보인다. 그는 서구 중심의 미술 담론 속에서 동양적 사유와 감각을 작품으로 풀어내며 독자적인 위치를 확립해 왔다.

4·19 혁명으로 한국에서 미술 공부를 이어가기 어려워지자 미국으로 건너간 곽훈은, 한국에서는 접하기 힘들었던 재료를 스스로 연구하고 실험하며 독학으로 자신만의 기법을 개발했다. 전통적인 형식에 얽매이지 않으면서도 동양적 사유를 근간으로 한 그의 작업은 점차 독자적인 화풍으로 자리 잡았다.

초창기 작품은 선불교와 동양철학, 불교 사상에 깊은 영향을 받아 형성되었으며, 그중 ‘기’와 ‘다완’ 연작이 대표적이다. ‘기’ 연작은 씨앗이 터지며 생성되는 에너지의 흐름을 다양한 색채와 질감으로 표현한 작업으로, 아크릴을 칠하고 긁어내는 과정을 반복해 독특한 물성을 드러낸다. ‘다완’ 연작은 어린 시절부터 이어져온 한국의 토기와 도자기에 대한 작가의 깊은 관심을 반영한다.

Kwak Hoon is an artist internationally recognized for his work that embodies the spiritual worldview of the East, particularly gaining acclaim in the United States. Challenging the dominance of materialism, his practice presents a distinctly Korean aesthetic rooted in Eastern philosophy and thought.

After the April 19 Revolution made it difficult for him to continue studying art in Korea, Kwak moved to the United States, where he began independently researching unfamiliar materials and developing his own techniques through self-directed experimentation. Free from conventional traditions yet grounded in Eastern sensibilities, his work gradually evolved into a highly individual visual language.

His early works were strongly influenced by Zen Buddhism, Eastern philosophy, and Buddhist thought, with the “Gi” and “Dawan” series standing out as representative bodies of work. The “Gi” series visualizes the flow of energy generated as a seed bursts into life, expressed through layered colors and textures created by repeatedly applying and scraping acrylic paint. The “Dawan” series reflects the artist’s long-standing fascination with Korean earthenware and ceramics, rooted in memories from his early life.
