구자현은 평생을 판화 작업에 몰두해 온 작가로, 고집스러운 기법과 독창적인 화풍을 정립하며 불모지에 가까웠던 판화 영역을 독자적으로 구축해 온 개척자이다. 홍익대학교에서 그래픽디자인을 전공한 그는 판화 선진국이었던 일본으로 건너가 본격적인 연구와 수련을 이어갔다.

오사카예술대학 미술학부, 도쿄 세이카대학교 미술학부 판화과, 큐슈산업대학교 서양화과 석사 과정에 이르기까지 약 8년에 걸친 유학 기간 동안 판화의 본질과 가능성을 집요하게 탐구했다. 그의 작업은 화면 안에서 가능한 모든 요소를 지우고 또 지워내며, 시각적으로 유추할 수 있는 형상이 더 이상 남지 않는 극한의 절제미를 드러낸다.

판화의 매력에 깊이 매료되어 작업에 매진해 온 구자현은 국내 판화 예술의 새로운 지평을 열었다는 평가를 받고 있다. 공간 국제판화 비엔날레 대상, 삿포로 국제현대판화비엔날레 스폰서상, 포틀랜드 국제판화전, 크라코프 국제판화비엔날레 등 다수의 국제 판화 비엔날레와 미술 대전에서 수상하며 그 예술성을 인정받아왔다.

Koo Ja Hyun is a pioneering printmaker who has devoted his entire life to printmaking, establishing a rigorous technique and a highly distinctive visual language. He is widely regarded as a trailblazer who independently developed printmaking practices in a field that was once considered nearly barren in Korea.

After majoring in graphic design at Hongik University, Koo continued his studies in Japan, a country with a strong tradition in printmaking. He spent nearly eight years studying at Osaka University of Arts, the Department of Printmaking at Tokyo Seika University, and the master’s program in Western painting at Kyushu Sangyo University, where he persistently explored the essence and possibilities of print as a medium.

Koo’s work as painting-like printmaking demonstrates an extreme sense of restraint, achieved by repeatedly erasing all possible elements within the frame until no visually inferable forms remain. Deeply immersed in the allure of printmaking, he has been praised for opening a new horizon in Korean print art. His achievements include major awards such as the Grand Prize at the Space International Print Biennale, the Sponsor Award at the Sapporo International Contemporary Print Biennale, as well as prizes at the Portland International Print Exhibition and the Krakow International Print Triennial.
