김영주 작가는 이화여자대학교에서 한국화와 미술사학을 전공했다. 2011년 런던의 Chelsea College of Art and Design에서 Fine Art 석사과정을 마친 뒤 런던에 거주하며 전업 작가의 길을 시작했다. 현재는 귀국 후 서울에서 활동하며 네 차례의 개인전과 다수의 단체전에 참여해 왔다.

그는 ‘재현한다는 것’에 대한 질문에서 출발해 ‘지우는 드로잉’ 작업을 시작했으며, 현재는 창작과 회화를 성립시키는 조건들을 재구성하는 작업을 이어가고 있다. 완공되지 않은 건축 현장이나 철거 현장, 허공의 캔버스, 전시가 끝난 뒤 텅 빈 화이트 큐브와 같은 공간을 마주할 때 새로운 실험에 대한 호기심을 느끼며 작업을 구상한다.

김영주는 회화의 보편적인 재료와 창작물을 창작물로 유효하게 만드는 조건들을 되짚으며, 그 안에 역설적인 규칙을 부여하거나 맹목적인 행위를 필연적인 상태로 전환하는 방식의 새로운 회화를 실험해 왔다. 이는 이미지의 홍수 속에서 이루어지는 창작이라는 특수한 노동을 통해 생산된 이미지의 역량을 묻는 동시에, 현대 사회의 시각문화를 다시 사유하기 위한 시도라 할 수 있다.

Kim Young Joo studied Korean painting and art history at Ewha Womans University. After completing her MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 2011, she began her career as a full-time artist while living in London. She is currently based in Seoul, where she has held four solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows.

Her practice began with “erasing drawings,” stemming from questions about representation, and has since evolved into an exploration of the conditions that define creation and painting. She often conceives her work when encountering unfinished construction sites, demolition areas, canvases suspended in empty space, or vacant white cubes left after exhibitions have ended.

Kim reconstructs the conventional materials of painting and the conditions that render a work valid as a creative act, introducing paradoxical rules or transforming seemingly blind actions into inevitable states. Through these experiments, she questions the capacity of images produced by the specialized labor of creation amid an overwhelming flood of visual content, while reconsidering the nature of visual culture in contemporary society.
