김원숙은 홍익대학교 서양화과에 입학한 후 미국 일리노이대학교에서 학사와 석사 과정을 마친 작가이다. 대학 1학년 시절 미국으로 유학을 떠난 이후 현재까지 그곳에 머물며 활동을 이어오고 있다. 국내외 다수의 개인전과 단체전을 통해 일본, 독일, 멕시코, 불가리아, 이탈리아 등 세계 각지의 화단에 이름을 알렸으며, 국내 미술 시장에서도 블루칩 작가로 평가받고 있다.

Kim Won Sook studied Western painting at Hongik University before completing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Illinois. After leaving for the United States during her freshman year of college, she has continued to live and work there ever since. Through numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Korea and abroad, she has gained international recognition in countries including Japan, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, and Italy, and is regarded as a blue-chip artist in the Korean art market.

As a Korean-American painter, Kim’s work conveys intimate narratives through remarkably simple forms. She depicts worlds shaped by lived experience and imagination with the tone of a quiet diary or, at times, through references to mythology, rendering them on canvas or box-shaped panels. Her paintings embody personal stories that resonate with universal sensibilities.

Kim emphasizes that her paintings are not meant to be difficult, but rather reflections of everyday experiences and emotions. She resists the notion that contemporary art must rely on obscure codes inaccessible to ordinary viewers, expressing discomfort with art that intimidates audiences through unnecessary complexity. “Life always came first for me, and art was something that emerged along the way,” she reflects. Her enduring practice over more than five decades offers viewers a sense of calm, sincerity, and quiet affirmation.
