청암 김순식은 회화를 전공하고 중국 경덕진시 도자연구소 중국고대 청화백자연구위원(중국 고급 공예미술사)으로 역임했으며, 이천도자예술마을 예스파크를 거점으로 개인전과 기획전을 다수 개최하는 등 국내외에서 활발한 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다. 화가와 도예가의 경계를 넘나들며 실용과 예술을 겸하는 작업으로, 무에서 유를 창조하는 도예가의 숨결이 강하게 느껴진다는 평가를 받아왔다.

그는 이러한 평가가 다소 어렵게 들린다고 말하지만, 인간과 친숙한 당나귀 등을 주요 소재로 삼아 실용성과 예술성을 깊고 농밀한 청화로 표현한 작품들을 꾸준히 선보이고 있다. 김순식의 ‘당나귀’ 작품에서 특히 푸른색의 청화가 두드러지는 이유도 여기에 있다. 청화의 블루는 무한한 확장이 가능한 색으로, 작가는 당나귀가 날개를 달고 저 멀리 푸른 하늘을 날아다니는 꿈과 희망을 상상하며 그 모습에 자신을 투영한다.

때로는 금색과 은색이 작품에 가미되기도 하는데, 이는 청화의 보색 개념으로 해석될 수 있는 동시에, 자칫 잃어버리기 쉬운 도자기의 형태감을 유지하기 위한 장치이기도 하다. 김순식의 작업은 회화와 도예, 상상과 현실이 교차하는 지점에서 깊은 서정과 조형적 밀도를 함께 드러낸다.

Kim Soonsik, also known as Cheongam Kim Soonsik, majored in painting and served as a research fellow on ancient blue-and-white porcelain at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Research Institute in China, holding the title of senior Chinese arts and crafts artist. Based in Icheon Ceramic Art Village Yes Park, he has actively presented his work through numerous solo and curated exhibitions both in Korea and abroad, building a dynamic artistic career that bridges painting and ceramics.

Although he humbly remarks that such descriptions may sound complicated, his works often focus on familiar subjects such as donkeys, rendered in deep cobalt blue that expresses both practicality and artistic sensibility. The predominance of blue-and-white porcelain tones in his donkey series reflects his belief that cobalt blue is a color capable of infinite expansion. Through the image of a donkey growing wings and flying freely across a vast blue sky, the artist projects his own dreams and hopes.

At times, gold and silver are incorporated into his works, functioning both as complementary tones to the blue and as a means of preserving the sculptural presence of ceramic form, which can easily be lost. Through this balance, Kim Soonsik reveals a poetic world where painting and ceramics, imagination and material reality, coexist in quiet harmony.
