‘북한산 작가’로 알려진 서양화가 김문영은 20여 년간 수행하는 마음으로 자연의 청정과 기백을 화폭에 담아왔다. 한국적 추상인 ‘단색화’가 주류를 이루던 국내 화단에서 독보적인 존재로, 제129회 프랑스 르살롱 국제 공모전에서 동상을 수상한 후 국립현대미술관에서 수상작을 전시하며 일찍이 해외로부터 작품 세계를 인정받았다.

가천대학교 회화과와 홍익대학교 교육대학원 미술교육과를 졸업한 그는 2000년대에 접어들며 또 다른 실험을 시작했다. 탄탄한 기본 구도 위에서 자연주의로 나아갔고, 이후 자연주의 색채를 더욱 강화하며 신자연주의의 길을 견고히 다져왔다.

신자연주의에서 그의 생태적 접근은 사라져가는 자연을 그림에 담는 데서 출발한다. 강인한 생명력으로 피어나는 야생화와 겨울의 북한산을 주요 모티브로 삼아, 자연이 들려주는 이야기를 화면 가득 채운다. 색채의 대비를 통한 스토리텔링은 은은함과 심오한 깊이를 동시에 자아내며, 백의민족과 민족주의, 한겨레의 얼을 존중하는 순백의 물감과 조용하지만 치밀하게 치솟는 강한 터치는 푸른 하늘을 정돈한다. 이는 우주와 자연을 존중하고 인간과 자연의 연결고리를 모색하는 작가의 질문과 답이 함께 채색된 결과이다. 그의 작품은 청와대, 통일부, 보령제약, SK네트웍스 등 여러 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Kim Moon Young, a Western-style painter known as the “Bukhansan artist,” has devoted more than two decades to capturing the purity and vital spirit of nature with a meditative mindset. Standing apart in the Korean art scene long dominated by monochrome abstraction, he gained early international recognition after receiving the Bronze Prize at the 129th Le Salon International in France, followed by an exhibition of the award-winning work at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

After graduating from the Department of Painting at Gachon University and the Graduate School of Education in Art Education at Hongik University, he embarked on a new phase of experimentation in the 2000s. Building upon a solid compositional foundation, he moved toward naturalism and subsequently strengthened its chromatic language, steadily establishing his path toward neo-naturalism.

Within neo-naturalism, his ecological approach begins with depicting the vanishing natural environment. Using winter landscapes of Bukhansan and wildflowers that bloom with resilient vitality as key motifs, he fills the canvas with stories offered by nature. His storytelling through color contrast evokes both subtlety and profound depth. Employing pure white paint that honors the spirit of the “white-clad people,” nationalism, and the Korean ethos, alongside quietly surging yet powerful brushstrokes that organize the blue sky, his works embody a noble inquiry into respecting the universe and nature while forging a connection between humanity and the natural world. His works are held in collections including Cheong Wa Dae, the Ministry of Unification, Boryung Pharmaceutical, and SK Networks.
