김귀연은 스스로 기도하는 삶을 살고 있다고 말하는 작가이다. 여기서 기도란 종교적 행위에 국한된 것이 아니라, 일상 속에서 누구나 품고 있는 바람과 염원의 심리를 의미한다. 그는 삶 속에서 반복적으로 이루어지는 바람의 마음을 ‘기도’라는 개념으로 풀어낸다.

사람들이 기도라는 정신적 행위를 증명하듯 반복적 동작을 수행하듯, 김귀연의 작업 역시 바라고 기도하며 점과 선, 면을 끊임없이 쌓고 중첩하는 행위로부터 출발한다. 그의 작업은 조형의 기본 요소인 점, 선, 면과 함께 청색과 백색의 절제된 색감, 최소한의 장식으로 구성되어 있다.

같은 형태의 석고 틀에서 만들어진 개체들의 형태를 미묘하게 변화시켜 쌓아 올리거나, 점과 선을 반복적으로 중첩하며 그것들이 작품 속에 축적되도록 한다. 장식 없는 온화한 푸른빛의 깨끗한 기면 위에 점을 찍고 선을 긋는 행위는 곧 작가에게 있어 기도의 과정이 된다. 그렇게 축적된 점과 선, 면은 작품에 새로운 표정과 의미를 부여하며, 완성된 작업은 김귀연이 간절히 바라온 기도의 결과이자 그 흔적으로 남는다.

Kim Gui Yeon describes herself as living a life of prayer. Rather than understanding prayer as a strictly religious act, she refers to it as the universal human psychology of hope and desire that exists within everyday life.

Just as people often engage in repetitive actions as a way of manifesting prayer as a mental practice, Kim’s work originates from acts of wishing and praying through the repeated accumulation and layering of dots, lines, and planes. Her compositions are built upon fundamental elements of form—point, line, and surface—along with restrained colors of blue and white and minimal ornamentation.

Using plaster molds of identical forms, she subtly alters each individual unit before stacking them, or repeatedly overlaps dots and lines so they gradually accumulate within the work. On calm, undecorated vessel-like surfaces tinted with gentle blue, the act of placing dots and drawing lines becomes an act of prayer itself. Through this process, the points, lines, and planes formed by prayer give rise to new expressions and meanings, leaving behind traces that embody both the outcome and the memory of the artist’s earnest wishes.
