김쎌은 여성성과 소녀성을 ‘다중 자아’적 관점으로 다양한 개념과 스타일을 시도하는 작가다. 실재와 환영, 존재와 의식의 접점과 분리를 회화와 사진, 설치, 영상 등 다양한 매체로 표현한다. 2017년부터 쎌(cell)시리즈로 데이터화하는 연구를 진행 중이다.

대학시절부터 자신만을 그려온 그녀는 스스로를 인형으로 생각하고 작업했다. 그래서 그녀의 모든 작업은 자화상으로 볼 수 있는데, 자신의 신체가 자가 증식하는 ‘쎌(cell)’의 개념을 도입하였기 때문이다. 쎌(cell)은 세포를 뜻하기도 하는 김쎌의 기본단위라 할 수 있다. 스스로를 세포(cell)화하여 존재를 무한히 증식한다는 의미로 쎌러문(cellormoon)이라 명명한다.

그녀는 하나의 분야만을 고집하는 게 아니라 페인팅이나 사진, 조각, 미디어 등 여러 다양한 작업을 하기 위해 ‘쎌러문 컴퍼니’라는 매니지먼트 회사도 설립해 콜라보레이션 작업을 하기로 했다. 쎌 개념의 작업에는 쎌과 소녀적인 감성을 하나로 만들고 싶었던 작가의 의지가 담겨 있다. 꽃을 소재로 한 F.cell 시리즈 (2017~)는 소녀성을 가지고 있는 꽃을 자아의 상징적인 매개체로 사용한 회화다. 미적 자아를 세포 덩어리로 형상화하고, 꽃을 도형이나 색면적으로 도식화 하여 차가우면서도 조형적인 미적 감각을 회화로 표현한다.

Kim Ssel is an artist who explores femininity and girlhood from a “multiple self” perspective, experimenting with diverse concepts and styles. She expresses the points of contact and separation between reality and illusion, existence and consciousness through various media including painting, photography, installation, and video. Since 2017, she has been conducting research that translates her work into data through the Cell series.

Having depicted only herself since her university years, she approached her practice by thinking of herself as a doll. As a result, all of her works can be viewed as self-portraits, as she introduced the concept of “cell,” in which her own body self-replicates. The cell, which also means a biological cell, can be considered the fundamental unit of Kim Ssel’s practice. She named this concept “cellormoon,” signifying the infinite multiplication of existence by transforming oneself into cells.

Rather than confining herself to a single field, she established a management company called “Cellormoon Company” to pursue a wide range of practices—including painting, photography, sculpture, and media—and to engage in collaborative projects. Works based on the cell concept embody the artist’s desire to unite the idea of the cell with girlish sensibility. The F.cell series (2017–), which takes flowers as its subject, uses flowers imbued with girlhood as symbolic mediators of the self. By shaping the aesthetic self into clusters of cells and schematizing flowers into geometric forms and color planes, she expresses a cool yet structural sense of beauty through painting.
