김봉수는 인간의 욕망과 허위의식을 상징하는 '피노키오'를 통해 현대인의 자화상을 조각으로 구현하는 작가이다. 그는 오랜 시간 조각의 본질과 자신의 조형 언어를 탐구해왔으며, 거짓말을 하면 코가 길어지는 피노키오를 현대 사회를 살아가는 인간의 은유로 재해석해 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축했다. 브론즈를 비롯한 다양한 재료를 활용한 조형 작업을 통해 익숙한 동화 속 캐릭터를 인간의 욕망과 자아를 성찰하는 상징으로 확장시키며, 현대인이 마주한 내면의 모습을 담아낸다.

작품 속 피노키오는 대부분 눈과 입이 없는 얼굴로 표현된다. 이는 특정 인물을 재현하기보다 관람자가 작품 표면에 비친 자신의 모습을 마주하며 스스로를 투영하도록 의도한 장치이다. 작가는 거짓과 진실, 욕망과 자아 사이에서 끊임없이 흔들리는 인간의 모습을 피노키오의 긴 코에 담아내며, 조각을 통해 우리 자신을 돌아보는 사유의 계기를 제시한다.

김봉수는 경북대학교 미술학과와 동 대학원을 졸업하고, 현재 경북대학교 미술학과에서 후학을 양성하며 활발한 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다. 2007년 이후 다수의 개인전과 기획전을 개최했으며, 대표 연작 <I am Pinocchio>를 통해 현대인의 욕망과 거짓, 자아에 대한 질문을 조각으로 풀어내고 있다. 그의 작품은 국내외 컬렉터들의 꾸준한 관심을 받고 있으며, BTS 뷔의 소장 작품으로 알려지며 대중적으로도 널리 주목받고 있다.

Kim Bong Soo is a sculptor who portrays the modern human condition through the symbolic figure of Pinocchio, exploring themes of desire and self-deception. Over the years, he has developed a distinctive artistic language by investigating the essence of sculpture and reinterpreting the familiar fairy-tale character as a metaphor for people living in contemporary society. Working primarily with bronze and other sculptural materials, he transforms Pinocchio into a powerful symbol that reflects human desire, identity, and the complexities of the inner self.

Most of the Pinocchio figures in Kim's work are intentionally depicted without eyes or a mouth. Rather than representing a specific individual, this artistic choice encourages viewers to see their own reflections in the polished surface of the sculpture and project themselves onto the figure. Through Pinocchio's elongated nose, Kim visualizes the fragile boundary between truth and falsehood, as well as the constant tension between desire and identity, inviting viewers to contemplate their own humanity.

Kim Bong Soo graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Kyungpook National University and its Graduate School. He currently teaches at Kyungpook National University while continuing his active artistic practice. Since 2007, he has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions, and his representative series, I am Pinocchio, explores questions surrounding desire, deception, and selfhood through sculpture.
