정우범은 조선대학교 교육대학원에서 미술교육을 전공한 후, 국내외에서 다양한 전시 이력을 쌓아온 독창적인 작가다. 1971년 초등학교 교사로서 경력을 시작한 그는 아내를 3년간 설득한 끝에 40대 중반에 화가의 길을 걷기로 결심했다. 이후 미국에서 그의 이름을 알리기 시작했고, 비영리 여성 교육기관 ‘르네상스파운데이션’의 설립자인 나이나 메이 여사가 그의 작품에 주목하게 되면서 미국 갤러리 미셸의 전속 작가로 활동하게 되었다.

어릴 적 훈장님이었던 아버지의 영향으로 지필묵을 가까이 접한 그는 물을 사용하는 먹의 매력을 발견하며 자연스럽게 수채화 작업에 몰두하게 되었다. 일반적으로 수채화는 맑고 투명한 표현이 특징이지만, 정우범의 작품은 유화 물감처럼 풍부한 밀도를 지닌다. 그는 특정 부분에 아크릴 물감을 사용해 입체감을 더하고, 수채화 특유의 번짐 효과로 화면 구성을 더욱 다채롭게 만든다.

교직 생활 중 방과 후 아이들의 미술을 지도하던 경험은 그에게 아이들처럼 형식에 얽매이지 않고 그림을 그리겠다는 다짐을 안겨주었고, 이는 오늘날까지 이어지는 그의 독창적인 화풍의 기반이 되었다. 정우범의 작품은 단순한 그림을 넘어 감정과 이야기를 담아내는 창작물로, 한국에서도 많은 이들의 사랑을 받고 있다.

Jung Woobum is a distinctive artist who majored in Art Education at the Graduate School of Education of Chosun University and has built an extensive exhibition career both in Korea and abroad. He began his professional life as an elementary school teacher in 1971, and after persuading his wife for three years, decided in his mid-forties to pursue the path of a painter. His name gradually gained recognition in the United States, where his work caught the attention of Naina May, founder of the nonprofit women’s education organization the Renaissance Foundation, leading him to become an exclusive artist represented by Galerie Michel.

Influenced by his father, who was a traditional village teacher, Jung Woobum grew up closely acquainted with brush, ink, and paper, eventually discovering the expressive allure of ink used with water and naturally immersing himself in watercolor painting. While watercolor is generally known for its clear and transparent qualities, his works possess a rich density reminiscent of oil paint. By incorporating acrylic paint in certain areas to add dimensionality and employing the distinctive bleeding effects of watercolor, he creates compositions of remarkable depth and variety.

His experience teaching art to children after school during his years as an educator inspired him to paint freely, unbound by rigid forms, much like children themselves—a resolve that has shaped his unique artistic style to this day. Jung Woobum’s works transcend simple imagery, capturing emotion and narrative, and continue to be warmly embraced by audiences in Korea.
