정재철 JUNG JAE CHUL
홍익대학교 미술대학교 회화과를 졸업한 정재철 작가는 수많은 관계 속에 살아가는 현대인들의 이야기를 그림으로 풀어낸다. 정재철 작가는 인물에서 시작해서 현재는 인물을 배제하고 추상 작업을 이어가는데, 이는 인간의 욕망에서 비롯되는 다양한 감정들을 순화시킬 수 있는 표현 방법에 집중하기 때문이다.
강렬한 색의 조합에서 전달되는 무한한 에너지와 과감하고 생동감 있는 텍스쳐에서 감정의 물질적 형태가 연상되기도 한다. 캔버스 안에서 서로 조화를 이루며 어우러지는 컬러와 텍스쳐는 그가 의도한 타협의 흔적들이다. 그의 작품은 늘 계획한 대로만 흘러가지 않는다. 인물에 대해 “모순”이라는 단어를 적용하여 인물 위에 추상을 덮어씌운 비구상작과 렌티큘러(lenticular)작을 붙여서 한 작품으로 이어진다. 그의 이러한 추상 작품은 반복된 행위를 바탕으로 이루어 지는데, 이 반복은 수 많은 시행착오의 연속에서 비롯된다.
Jung Jaechul, who graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University College of Fine Arts, expresses the stories of contemporary individuals living within countless relationships through his paintings. Beginning his practice with figurative work, he has since shifted toward abstraction, deliberately excluding the human figure. This transition reflects his focus on finding modes of expression capable of refining and sublimating the diverse emotions that arise from human desire.
The infinite energy conveyed through bold combinations of intense colors and the daring, dynamic textures evoke the material form of emotion itself. Within the canvas, colors and textures coexist in harmony, becoming traces of compromise that the artist intentionally allows to emerge. His works never unfold exactly as planned. Applying the concept of “contradiction” to the human figure, Jung creates non-representational works by overlaying abstraction onto figuration, and by combining lenticular elements into a single, continuous piece. These abstract works are formed through repetitive actions, with repetition arising from an ongoing succession of trial and error.
