홍정희는 서울대학교 회화과를 졸업하고, 미국 미시간대학교에서 교환교수를 역임한 후, 1971년 국전에서 문화공보부 장관상을 수상하고, 1996년에는 석주미술상을 수상했다. 그의 작품은 단순한 패턴과 강렬한 색채, 두꺼운 마띠에르로 화면마다 넘치는 에너지를 표현한다.

그의 ‘Nano’ 시리즈는 아트앤 프린트스튜디오에서 판화 작업을 통해 만들어졌으며, 물감에 톱밥을 섞고 자재를 활용하여 현무암과 같은 거친 질감을 표현한다. 이 마띠에르의 진분홍꽃들은 캔버스에서 벗어나 생동감 있게 피어나는 듯하다.

꽃, 삼각형, 십자가, 네잎클로버와 같은 다양한 형태의 일정한 문양들이 화려한 색채로 반복되며, 작가의 단순화된 화풍에 대한 집념과 보편성을 드러낸다. ‘탈아’, ‘열정’, ‘아-한국인’ 등의 시리즈 작업을 통해 자유분방하고 설득력 있는 색면 추상의 세계를 밀고 나갔다. 2019년 이길이구 갤러리에서의 개인전을 마지막으로, 2021년에 타계했다.

Hong Jung Hee graduated from Seoul National University’s Department of Painting and served as an exchange professor at the University of Michigan in the United States. He received the Minister of Culture and Public Information Award at the National Art Exhibition in 1971 and the Seokju Art Award in 1996. His works are known for their bold colors, simple patterns, and thick impasto, with each piece exuding energy.

His “Nano” series, created during his printmaking work at Art & Print Studio, incorporates sawdust mixed with paint and other materials to achieve a rough, basalt-like texture. The deep pink flowers in these works seem to bloom outward from the canvas, creating a dynamic visual effect.

Various recurring motifs, including flowers, triangles, crosses, and four-leaf clovers, are rendered in vibrant colors, reflecting the artist's dedication to simplicity and universality in his style. Through series such as “Tala,” “Passion,” and “A-Korean,” Hong pursued a dynamic and persuasive form of color-field abstraction. His final solo exhibition was held at the Ikili-gu Gallery in 2019, and he passed away in 2021.
