팡리쥔은 1963년 중국 후베이 한단시에서 태어나 1989년 중앙미술학원 판화과를 졸업했다. 그는 ‘냉소적 사실주의’의 선두주자로, 베이징을 중심으로 활발한 작품 활동을 이어가고 있다. 1990년대 시니컬 리얼리즘 문화운동의 일환으로 그는 중국 미술계에서 중요한 시기에 예술적, 인간적 가치, 도덕성에 대한 세계관을 형성했다.

1989년 차이나 아방가르드 첫 전시회를 시작으로, 팡리쥔은 수많은 개인전과 단체전, 기획전에 참여했으며, 1995년과 1997년 광주 비엔날레 등 한국에서도 다수의 전시를 진행했다. ‘세계의 도덕’, ‘행복의 비전’, ‘또 다른 모던, 세계 문화의 집’ 등의 제목으로 작품을 발표하며, 가족과 친구들의 영향을 받아 예술적 방향을 잡아나갔다.

그의 예술은 변화하는 현대 사회에서 단호한 비판 의지를 담고 있으며, 물은 그가 작품에서 중요한 역할을 하는 요소로 꼽힌다. 그는 중국 사회에서 물이 갖는 철학적 의미와 자신만의 느낌을 결합하여 진실과 존재에 대한 목소리를 전달한다고 설명했다. 민머리 인물 군상의 전형을 통해 사회에서 개인이 느끼는 고독감과 익명성, 냉소적인 시각을 절제된 기법으로 형상화한 팡리쥔의 작품은 파리 퐁피두센터, 뉴욕 현대미술관, 시애틀미술관, 도쿄현대미술관 등 주요 미술관에 소장되어 있다.

Fang Lijun was born in 1963 in Handan, Hubei Province, China, and graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. As a leading figure in “Cynical Realism,” he has been actively involved in the art world, based in Beijing. In the 1990s, during the rise of the Cynical Realism movement in China, Fang developed his worldview on art, human values, and morality at a significant turning point in Chinese art history.

Starting with his first exhibition at China Avant-Garde in 1989, Fang held numerous solo exhibitions, group shows, and curated exhibitions. He participated in the Gwangju Biennale in 1995 and 1997, among other exhibitions in South Korea. Through titles such as *The Morality of the World*, *Vision of Happiness*, and *Another Modern: House of World Culture*, Fang shaped his artistic direction, influenced by family and friends.

Fang’s art strongly expresses critical views on the evolving contemporary society, and water plays a significant role in his works. He explains that water helps convey the philosophical meaning it holds within Chinese society, along with his own feelings and voice on truth and appearance. Using his bald-headed character archetype, Fang embodies the loneliness, anonymity, cynicism, and rebellion against traditional values in modern Chinese society through restrained techniques. His works are housed in major institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
