심대기는 국내 디자인계에서 탁월한 역량을 발휘해 온 디자이너로, 다수의 기업과 브랜드의 시각 정체성을 구축하는 데 중요한 기여를 해왔다. 그는 시각디자인의 창의성과 혁신을 추구하며, 한국 디자인의 국제적 위상을 확장하는 데 앞장서 왔다.

그의 작업은 한국의 전통적 요소와 현대적 감각을 조화롭게 결합하는 것이 특징이며, ‘단순함 속의 복잡함’이라는 디자인 철학을 바탕으로 한다. 간결한 형태 속에 깊은 의미와 감정을 담아내며, 디자인이 미적 차원을 넘어 사회적 영향력을 가질 수 있음을 다양한 프로젝트를 통해 드러낸다.

심대기는 영국 런던예술대학교(UAL) 센트럴 세인트 마틴(CSM)에서 그래픽디자인 학사를, 유니버시티 칼리지 런던(UCL)에서 인류학 석사를, 서울대학교에서 디자인 박사 학위를 받았다. 현재 세종대학교, 서울과학기술대학교, 홍익대학교 시각디자인과 겸임 교수로 재직 중이다. <타이포잔치 2015: 국제 타이포그래피 비엔날레>, <타이포잔치 2017: 국제 타이포그래피 비엔날레>, <2018 서울디자인브랜드: 소통의 도구> 등 다수의 전시를 기획·큐레이팅했으며, 2019년 DDP 디자인 페어 기획운영위원을 역임했다. 또한 한국타이포그라피학회(KST) 대외 전시 이사(2017–2018)로 활동했고, 미국 그라피스 애뉴얼, 모스크바 골든비 그래픽디자인 비엔날레, 베이징 디자인 위크 등에서 심사위원을 맡았다. 작품 <SYSTEM>(2018)은 가상과 현실, 물질과 비물질의 중첩 공간에서 시각 요소의 상호작용을 실험한 작업으로, 뉴욕 그라피스 애뉴얼 금·은상과 미국 크리에이티비티 국제 어워드 은상을 수상했으며, 2020년 모스크바 골든비 그래픽디자인 비엔날레 초청 전시작으로 선정되었다. 2024년에는 DDP 디자인론칭페어 지원사업 평가위원과 뉴욕 그라피스 포스터 어워드 심사위원으로 활동했다.

Shim Dae Ki is a leading figure in the Korean design scene, recognized for his significant contributions to establishing visual identities for numerous companies and brands. Committed to creativity and innovation in visual design, he has played a key role in elevating the international presence of Korean design.

His work is characterized by a harmonious integration of traditional Korean elements with contemporary sensibilities. Guided by a philosophy of “complexity within simplicity,” Shim aims to embed profound meaning and emotion within concise forms, demonstrating through diverse projects that design can extend beyond aesthetics to carry social impact.

Shim earned his BFA in Graphic Design from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, an MA in Anthropology from University College London (UCL), and a PhD in Design from Seoul National University. He currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design at Sejong University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and Hongik University. He has curated and organized major exhibitions such as <Typojanchi 2015: International Typography Biennale>, <Typojanchi 2017: International Typography Biennale>, and <2018 Seoul Design Brand: A Tool for Communication>, and served as a planning committee member for the 2019 DDP Design Fair. From 2017 to 2018, he was Director of External Exhibitions at the Korean Society of Typography (KST), and has acted as a jury member for international platforms including Graphis Annual (USA), the Golden Bee Global Biennale of Graphic Design (Moscow), and Beijing Design Week. His work <SYSTEM> (2018) explores the interaction of visual elements within overlapping spaces between the virtual and the real, the material and the immaterial, prompting shifts in perception and sensory experience. The <SYSTEM> series received Gold and Silver awards at the New York Graphis Annual, a Silver award at the US Creativity International Awards, and was selected for the 2020 Golden Bee Biennale in Moscow. In 2024, he served as an evaluator for the DDP Design Launching Fair support program and as a jury member for the New York Graphis Poster Awards.
