전혁림은 고향 부산을 중심으로 작품 활동을 펼치며 바다를 주요 소재로 작업한 작가이다. 그는 완벽한 자연은 이미 존재하고 있으며, 자신의 역할은 고향 풍경이 지닌 감각과 인상을 표현하는 것이라 말해왔다.

한국적인 소재를 사용하는 데서 나아가, 전혁림은 이러한 요소들이 화면 위에서 어떻게 구성되고 조형화될 수 있는지에 대한 원리를 깊이 탐구했다. 정식 미술 교육을 받지 않았음에도 독학으로 회화를 익혀 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축했으며, 독특한 색채 감각을 통해 한국 추상 회화를 개척한 선구적 서양화가로 평가받는다.

서양화가였던 그는 통영의 바다를 연상시키는 청색을 비롯해 전통적인 오방색을 즐겨 사용하며 ‘통영의 피카소’, ‘바다의 화가’, ‘색채의 마술사’로 불렸다. 1938년 24세의 나이로 부산미술전에 <신화적 해변>, <누드>, <월광> 등을 출품해 입선하며 주목을 받았고, 1949년 제1회 국전 입선을 계기로 통영과 부산을 중심으로 활동하며 부산·경남 미술계를 대표하는 작가로 자리매김했다. 2002년에는 국립현대미술관 ‘올해의 작가’로 선정되었으며, 2010년 5월 25일 향년 96세로 타계했다.

Chun Hyuck Lim was an artist who based his practice around his hometown of Busan, creating works inspired by the sea and its surrounding landscapes. He believed that nature itself was already complete, and that his role was simply to convey the essence and atmosphere of the scenery he had known since childhood.

Moving beyond the use of Korean subject matter alone, Chun closely examined the principles of how such elements could be structured and composed within the pictorial plane. Although he received no formal art education, he taught himself painting and went on to establish a distinctive artistic language, becoming recognized as a pioneering Western-style painter who helped shape Korean abstract art through his unique use of color.

Despite working within Western painting traditions, Chun frequently employed traditional Korean Obangsaek colors—particularly deep blues reminiscent of the sea of Tongyeong—earning him the titles “the Picasso of Tongyeong,” “the Painter of the Sea,” and “the Magician of Color.” He first gained recognition in 1938 at the age of 24, when works such as <Mythical Seashore>, <Nude>, and <Moonlight> were selected for the Busan Art Exhibition. After being selected for the inaugural National Art Exhibition in 1949, he became a leading figure in the Busan and Gyeongnam art scene. Receiving renewed attention in the 2000s, he was named Artist of the Year by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2002, and passed away in 2010 at the age of 96.
