최선은 홍익대학교에서 서양화를 전공한 중견 작가로, 국내를 비롯해 프랑스 파리, 벨기에 브뤼셀, 인도 뉴델리, 홍콩 등에서 왕성하게 활동하고 있다. 그는 기존 미술의 형식과 패러다임을 뛰어넘는 도전 의식과 통찰력을 바탕으로, 미술계에 만연한 허위의식을 날카롭게 짚으며 참신한 메시지를 던져왔다.

작가는 미술이란 무엇이며, 언제 어떻게 예술이 될 수 있는가에 대한 질문을 지속적으로 제기한다. 통상적으로 미술 재료로 분류되는 소재나 표현 방식에 국한되지 않고, 재료의 물질성을 넘어 보이지 않는 가치와 의미를 탐구해 왔다.

돼지기름, 동물의 피, 김칫국물, 침 등 비전통적인 재료를 사용한 설치 작업은 사회적 파장을 일으키며, 아름다움과 추함을 비롯한 모든 가치가 상대적임을 드러낸다. 이를 통해 관객으로 하여금 예술의 의미와 절대적 가치가 무엇인지 되묻게 한다. 그는 뱅크아트 Studio NYK(2013, 일본), 송은 아트스페이스(2015), CR Collective(2017)에서 개인전을 개최했으며, 뉴욕 한국문화원(2015), 주중 한국문화원(2016), 소마미술관(2016), 금호미술관(2018) 등 주요 기관 전시에 참여했다. 그의 작품은 Sigg Collection(스위스), 서울시립미술관, 부산현대미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.

Choi Sun is a mid-career artist who studied Western painting at Hongik University and has been actively exhibiting both in Korea and internationally, including Paris, Brussels, New Delhi, and Hong Kong. With a strong sense of experimentation and critical insight, he challenges conventional artistic paradigms while confronting the false consciousness prevalent in the art world.

His practice persistently questions what art is and under what conditions it can come into being. Rather than limiting himself to traditional artistic materials or methods, Choi explores values that extend beyond materiality, continuously probing the invisible dimensions embedded within artistic practice.

Using unconventional materials such as pig fat, animal blood, kimchi broth, and saliva, his installation works have provoked strong reactions, prompting viewers to reconsider the relativity of values including beauty and ugliness. Through this, Choi invites audiences to reflect on the meaning of art and the notion of absolute value. He has held solo exhibitions at BankART Studio NYK (2013, Japan), SongEun Art Space (2015), and CR Collective (2017), and has participated in major institutional exhibitions including the Korean Cultural Center New York (2015), Korean Cultural Center China (2016), SOMA Museum of Art (2016), and Kumho Museum of Art (2018). His works are held in collections such as the Sigg Collection (Switzerland), Seoul Museum of Art, and Busan Museum of Contemporary Art.
