채온은 쉼 없이 눈앞의 대상을 반복적으로 그린다. 그가 이렇게 그림에 몰두하는 것은 “가공되지 않은 날 것 그대로의 상태를 회화로 기록”하기 위해서이다. 뒤섞이며 흔들리는 듯한 그의 화면은 존재론에서 말하듯 세상에 우연히 내던져진 존재의 불확정적인 상태를 떠올리게 한다. 오랜 기간 작품 속에 반복적으로 등장해 온 부유하는 흰 스마일은 이러한 존재의 가벼움을 드러내는 동시에, 묵묵히 화폭 안 자신의 위치를 점유하며 그림 속에 심겨진 작가의 자아를 반영한다.

채온의 세계에는 오직 ‘그린다’는 원초적 행위와 ‘그림’이라는 신기한 대상만이 존재한다. 화가 채온은 오롯이 그림을 그린다. 찰나처럼 스쳐 지나가지만 우리의 몸 어딘가에 깊게 각인되는 순간들, 그는 그 사라지는 것들의 나타남을, 혹은 나타남의 사라짐을 그린다. 존재의 의미를 쉽게 단정할 수 없듯, 우리는 사라지고 나타나는 것들이 의미하는 바 또한 알 수 없다. 그러나 회화란 그 어떤 이념이나 명분에 앞서 ‘그림을 그린다’는 경이로운 행위로 존재하는 것이 아닐까. 아무도 알아채지 못할 얼룩 같은 그의 그림은 혼돈스럽지만 선명하고, 아득하지만 생생하다. 지극히 미미하면서도 한없이 경이로운 우리의 삶처럼. 채온(b.1985)은 한남대학교 조형예술대를 졸업했다. 2013년부터 표갤러리, 대구문화예술회관, 이브갤러리 등에서 다수의 개인전을 개최했으며, 서울옥션, 대구문화예술회관, 아라아트센터, 스페이스K, (재)서울예술재단, 서울시립남서울미술관, 부산시청 등에서 단체전에 참여했다. 2015년 (재)서울예술재단 제1회 포트폴리오 박람회 최우수상을 수상했고, 2018년 대구문화예술회관 올해의 청년작가, 2018–2019년 대구문화재단 청년예술가육성지원사업 선정 작가로 이름을 올렸다. 가창창작스튜디오(2015), 영천예술창작스튜디오(2019) 레지던시에 참여했으며, 주요 소장처는 서울시립미술관, 대구문화예술회관, 서울예술재단, 표갤러리 등이다.

Chaeon repeatedly paints the subjects before his eyes without pause. His immersion in painting stems from a desire to “record the raw, unprocessed state of being through painting.” The seemingly tangled and trembling surfaces of his works evoke the ontological condition of beings accidentally thrown into the world—an indeterminate state of existence. The floating white smile, which has appeared persistently throughout his works, suggests the lightness of such existence while quietly occupying its place within the canvas, reflecting the artist’s embedded self.

In Chaeon’s world, there exists only the primal act of “painting” and the wondrous entity called “a painting.” He devotes himself entirely to the act of painting. Fleeting moments that brush past like an instant yet leave deep imprints somewhere within our bodies—he paints the emergence of what disappears, or the disappearance of what emerges. Just as the meaning of existence cannot be easily defined, we cannot fully grasp what these cycles of appearing and vanishing signify. Yet perhaps painting exists, before any ideology or justification, as the miraculous act of painting itself. His works, like unnoticed stains, are chaotic yet vivid, distant yet intensely alive—much like our own lives, at once minuscule and infinitely wondrous. Chaeon (b.1985) graduated from Hannam University with a degree in Fine Arts. Since 2013, he has held numerous solo exhibitions at venues including Pyo Gallery, Daegu Culture & Arts Center, and Eve Gallery. He has participated in group exhibitions at Seoul Auction, Daegu Culture & Arts Center, Ara Art Center, Space K, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, Seoul Museum of Art (Nam-Seoul), and Busan City Hall, among others. In 2015, he received the Grand Prize at the 1st Portfolio Fair organized by the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. He was selected as the Young Artist of the Year by the Daegu Culture & Arts Center in 2018 and as a recipient of the Daegu Foundation for Arts and Culture’s Young Artist Support Program (2018–2019). He has participated in residency programs at Gachang Creative Studio (2015) and Yeongcheon Art Studio (2019). His works are included in the collections of Seoul Museum of Art, Daegu Culture & Arts Center, Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, and Pyo Gallery.
