‘북극곰 작가’로 불리는 변대용은 친숙한 동물 이미지를 차용해 사회 현상을 유머러스하게 풍자해 온 작가이다. 특히 북극곰 시리즈는 지구온난화로 파괴되어 가는 자연과 점점 살 곳을 잃어가는 북극곰의 모습을 통해 환경에 대한 경각심을 일깨우며 인간의 욕망을 날카롭게 꼬집는다.

표면적으로는 환경 문제를 다루는 듯 보이지만, 점차 곰의 외양을 한 인간의 삶에 집중하며 백곰 가족을 통해 위로와 희망의 메시지를 전한다. 20년 넘게 전업 작가로 활동해 온 그는 50여 회의 개인전과 200여 회의 단체전에 참여하며 꾸준한 작품 활동을 이어오고 있다.

그의 작품은 아모레퍼시픽 미술관, 흥국생명, 라마다호텔 부산, 포항시립미술관 등 다수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Byun Dae Yong, known as the “polar bear artist,” has employed familiar animal imagery to humorously satirize contemporary social phenomena. His well-known polar bear series raises awareness of environmental issues by depicting nature under threat from global warming and polar bears gradually losing their habitats, while subtly critiquing human desire.

Although his work initially appears to focus on environmental narratives, it gradually shifts toward the human condition embodied in bear-like figures, conveying messages of comfort and hope through depictions of polar bear families. He has worked as a full-time artist for over two decades, participating in more than 50 solo exhibitions and over 200 group exhibitions.

His works are included in the collections of institutions such as the Amorepacific Museum of Art, Heungkuk Life Insurance, Ramada Hotel Busan, and Pohang Museum of Steel Art.
