변상태는 대학에서 유희(amusement), 은유(metaphor), 에로티시즘(eroticism)을 키워드로 삼아 「디자인과 조형」의 상관성에 대한 연구와 강의를 진행해 왔다. 풍자와 해학적 접근을 통해 ‘디자인 제품의 표정(expression)’을 만들어내는 저술 활동과 교육을 병행하며, 디자인이 지닌 감각적·개념적 가능성을 탐구해 왔다.

순수예술이라는 새로운 장르에 본격적으로 입문한 이후, 그는 작가로서의 정체성 표현에 대해 깊은 고민을 거듭했다. 이 과정에서 평면과 입체적 방법을 넘나들며 콜라주(collage), 레디메이드(ready-made), 아상블라주(assemblage), 부조(relief) 등의 기법을 참고해 작업 영역을 확장해 나갔다.

변상태는 예술가가 단순히 아름다움만을 추구하는 존재가 아니라, 시대를 비평하고 그 사유를 작품에 담아내야 한다고 믿는다. 이러한 태도는 작가에게 주어진 권리이자 동시에 의무라는 인식으로 이어지며, 그는 다양한 실험적 시도를 통해 스스로의 예술적 방향을 지속적으로 탐색하고 있다.

Byeon Sang Tai has conducted research and teaching at the university level on the relationship between design and form, focusing on concepts such as amusement, metaphor, and eroticism. Through satire and humor, he has explored the idea of “expression” in design products, engaging in both writing and educational activities that examine the conceptual and sensorial potential of design.

As he entered the field of fine art, Byeon began an in-depth exploration of artistic identity. Moving between two-dimensional and three-dimensional approaches, he expanded his practice by referencing techniques such as collage, ready-made, assemblage, and relief.

Byeon believes that an artist’s role extends beyond the pursuit of beauty to include critical reflection on the 시대 and its conditions, translating those thoughts into visual form. Viewing this as both a right and a responsibility, he continues to seek his own artistic direction through a wide range of experimental investigations.
