백암 백만우는 원색적인 유화 작품으로 널리 알려진 화가로, 보라, 파랑, 흰색 등 강렬한 색채를 통해 내면세계를 표현하는 ‘심미술’ 장르를 창안한 작가이다. 그는 40여 년간 조선백자와 전통 색감에 대한 깊이 있는 연구를 지속해 왔으며, 매년 ‘국제 H.M.A 예술제’를 개최해 국내외 작가들과 활발한 교류를 이어가고 있다.

1970년대 작가 활동 초기에는 정밀화에 몰두하며 탄탄한 기량을 쌓았고, 이후 점차 강렬한 원색과 독창적인 표현 기법을 발전시켰다. 대표작 <공간지대>는 분단의 상처를 이미지로 형상화한 작품으로, 초록·빨강·파랑의 강한 색채를 사용해 사슴과 들판을 생생하게 묘사했다. 이 작품은 단원예술제에서 대상을 수상하며 그의 이름을 널리 알리는 계기가 되었다.

1987년 이후 백만우는 한국 미술 2세대를 대표하는 중심 화가로 자리매김했으며, 일본을 비롯한 해외에서도 다수의 상을 수상하며 국제적인 명성을 쌓았다. 초기에는 동물을 주제로 한 애니멀 아티스트로 활동했으나, 이후 한국 고유의 색을 활용한 독창적인 이미지 표현에 집중해 왔다. 기네스북 기록 보유 아티스트로서 미국 대통령상, 일본 내각총리대신상, 대만 평화예술대상 등 다양한 국제 상을 수상했으며, 그의 화려하고 강렬한 색채의 회화는 오늘날에도 깊은 감정과 사유를 시각적으로 전달하고 있다.

Back Man Woo, also known as Baekam, is a painter widely recognized for his vivid oil paintings rendered in intense primary colors. He originated the genre known as “Sim Art,” a form of aesthetic expression that conveys inner worlds through powerful hues such as purple, blue, and white. For over four decades, he has conducted in-depth research on Joseon white porcelain and traditional Korean color sensibilities, while annually organizing the International H.M.A Art Festival to collaborate with artists from around the world.

In the early stages of his career during the 1970s, Back focused on highly detailed painting to refine his technical skills, later developing a bold visual language defined by striking colors and unique expressive methods. His representative work, <Space Zone>, visualizes the wounds of national division, depicting deer and open fields through vivid greens, reds, and blues. The work won the Grand Prize at the Danwon Art Festival, bringing him widespread recognition.

Since 1987, Back Man Woo has established himself as a central figure of the second generation of Korean contemporary painters and has gained international acclaim through numerous awards in Japan and beyond. Beginning as an animal artist, he gradually shifted his focus toward creating distinctive imagery rooted in Korean color traditions. As a Guinness World Record–holding artist, he has received honors such as the U.S. Presidential Award, the Prime Minister of Japan Award, and the Taiwan Peace Art Award.
