안도 다다오는 1941년 오사카에서 태어난 일본의 건축가이다. 어릴 적부터 무언가를 만드는 일에 흥미를 가졌었던 그는, 대학에서 건축 교육을 받지 않고 여행과 독학을 통해 건축에 입문했다. 일본의 주요 사찰이나 신사, 유적지 등을 방문하고, 공예가와 도시 설계자에게 도제 수업을 받으며 자신만의 방식으로 건축을 체득해 나갔다. 이후 미국과 유럽, 아프리카를 여행하며 르 코르뷔지에, 미스 반 데어 로에, 프랭크 로이드 라이트, 루이스 칸과 같은 건축가들의 건축물을 보며 견문을 넓혔다. 《물의 교회, 홋카이도》, 《빛의 교회, 오사카>, 《물의 사원, 효고》를 통해 일본 전통 양식과 현대 서양 디자인을 창의적으로 접목시켰고, 이를 통해 물과 빛, 노출 콘크리트의 건축가로 불리며 완벽한 기하학 구조가 절묘하게 자연과 어우러지는 평온하고 명상적인 공간을 창조해냈다. 그는 많은 상을 받았으며 미국의 예일대학, 컬럼비아대학, 하버드대학의 건축학부 객원교수를 거쳐 1997년 도쿄대학 교수, 2003년부터 명예 교수를 맡고 있다. 2000년대 중반부터 한국에서도 대형 프로젝트를 시작해 2008년 제주도 섭지코지에 《글라스하우스》와 《지니어스 로사이》가 지어졌고, 2012년 제주도 서귀포시에 《본태박물관》, 2013년 강원도 원주에 《한솔뮤지엄》, 2014년 서울 혜화동에 《재능교육 혜화문화센터》가 건립되었다

Tadao Ando is a Japanese self-taught architect whose approach to architecture and landscape was categorized by architectural historian Francesco Dal Co as "critical regionalism". Ando was born a few minutes before his twin brother in 1941 in Osaka, Japan. At the age of two, his family chose to separate them, and have Tadao live with his grandmother. He worked as a truck driver and boxer before settling on the profession of architect, despite never having formal training in the field. Struck by the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Imperial Hotel on a trip to Tokyo as a second-year high school student, he eventually decided to end his boxing career less than two years after graduating from high school to pursue architecture.[citation needed] He attended night classes to learn drawing and took correspondence courses on interior design. He visited buildings designed by renowned architects like Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Louis Kahn before returning to Osaka in 1968 to establish his own design studio, Tadao Ando Architects and Associates.
